- Preoperative (Before Surgery):
- Room & Instrument Prep: Arrange surgical instruments, drapes, and sterile supplies in the Operating Room (OR).
- Sterile Scrubbing: Perform a meticulous surgical hand scrub and don sterile gowns and gloves.
- Initial Counts: Conduct a baseline count of all sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse to prevent retained foreign objects.
- Patient Advocacy: Verify patient identity, surgical site, and consent forms.
- Intraoperative (During Surgery):
- Instrument Handling: Anticipate the surgeon's needs and pass instruments, sutures, and supplies in a timely, decisive manner.
- Sterility Management: Continuously monitor the sterile field to ensure no contamination occurs; replace any compromised items immediately.
- Safety Monitoring: Observe the patient’s condition and the surgical site for complications like excessive bleeding.
- Postoperative (After Surgery):
- Final Counts: Perform mandatory counts of all materials before the incision is closed; report any discrepancies immediately.
- Dressing & Transfer: Assist in applying surgical dressings and help transfer the patient safely to the recovery room (PACU).
- Documentation: Record surgical details, including used supplies and instrument counts, in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Typically requires a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent; some regions accept a Diploma (GNM).
- Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license is mandatory.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Advanced certification like CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) is highly preferred.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure, life-and-death scenarios
