Responsibilities: Performs sample processing and exempt screening and monitoring tests in accordance with CMS (CLIA '88), OSHA and other applicable regulatory, established standards as may be applicable. Assists with both clinical and non-clinical tasks while working under the direct supervision of a licensed medical technologist/ technician to ensure that accurate, reliable results are generated by the laboratory. Utilize professional judgment in interpretations of clinical lab results and in responding to unusual situations. Utilize judgment and discretion in considering sample integrity and acceptability, process calibration, reagent concentration and stability, quality control relationship to unknown results, evaluation of unexpected patient results and error identification.</li><li>
Perform a variety of clinical laboratory tests, including set up of supplies and equipment to analyze specimens (i.e. body fluids, tissue, sputum, etc.) according to written procedures. Forward unresolved problems to supervisor. Maintain the integrity of the specimens throughout the process.</li><li>
Adhere to established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data. Perform quality control procedures as required and maintain adequate control records to include problem log documentation, reporting any abnormal or unusual variances to supervisor and/or Medical Director as appropriate. Perform daily QC review.</li><li>
Coordinate quality assurance and participate in quality improvement activities.</li><li>
Document test results and report results to nursing units and/or physicians according to established procedure. Inform supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results. Recognize critical and/or life threatening results and immediately telephone critical values to the nursing units and/or physicians.</li><li>
Check, calibrate and maintain equipment in working order, performing preventative maintenance at prescribed intervals and as appropriate. <div>JOB SUMMARY</div>
<p></p><div>Responsible to perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and aseptically prepare blood products. The results of these tests are used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.</div>
<p></p><div>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</div>
<p></p><div><ul><li>Prepares and performs a variety of laboratory tests in one or more sections of the laboratory to obtain laboratory results and data used for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.</li>
<li>Ensures that all testing is performed accurately and resulted as ordered within turn-around-time expectations. Completes all required documentation, and follows up on all unusual and critical results as required by policy and procedure.</li>
<li>Obtains/receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Understands specimen factors that can affect the accuracy of laboratory testing and insures the integrity of the specimen through the testing process.</li>
<li>Understands the theory behind laboratory methods and operates various pieces of laboratory instrumentation used to obtain test results. Performs instrument maintenance, calibrations, quality control, and test procedures, troubleshooting and refers questionable or unusual cases to the technical supervisor, lab supervisor, director or pathologist.</li>
<li>Maintains continuing education and competency requirements as defined by laboratory policy and certification agency requirements.</li>
<li>Ensures compliance with all hospital, regulatory, safety, and accrediting agency requirements.</li>
<li>Proficient in hospital, laboratory and office computer systems.</li>
<li>As needed:</li>
<li>Assist, train and orient new staff and students in their respective lab disciplines.</li>
<li>Assist in regulatory preparation.</li>
<li>Maintains supply and reagent levels, and practices cost containment</li>
<li>Timely review of all laboratory / hospital system policies, procedures, and communications.</li>
<li>Performs other related duties as assigned or requested, including phlebotomy.</li>
