The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and operating room protocols, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician.

<h3 class="jobSectionHeader">Key Responsibilities</h3>

Surgical (Scrub) Duties:
<ul>
<li>Prepare and maintain sterile field using aseptic techniques
</li>
<li>Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedures
</li>
<li>Set up instruments, equipment, and supplies based on procedure requirements
</li>
<li>Assist surgeons by anticipating needs during procedures
</li>
<li>Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and needles
</li>
<li>Monitor sterile environment and take corrective action if contamination occurs
</li>
<li>Handle and label surgical specimens according to protocol
</li>
<li>Assist with dressings, drainage systems, and patient positioning
</li>
<li>Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination, and room turnover
</li>
</ul>Circulating Support:
<ul>
<li>Assist RN with pre-, intra-, and post-operative patient care
</li>
<li>Prepare and provide surgical equipment and supplies as needed
</li>
<li>Support patient positioning and safety during procedures
</li>
<li>Monitor operating room traffic and maintain sterile environment
</li>
<li>Assist with documentation and surgical counts
</li>
<li>Facilitate patient transport and room preparation for next case
</li>
</ul>Medication Support:
<ul>
<li>Assist RN with preparation of medications in the sterile field (under supervision only)
</li>
<li>Label all medications appropriately
</li>
<li>Communicate medication details clearly to the surgical team
</li>
<li>Follow strict guidelines (no handling of controlled substances)
</li>
</ul>Operational Support:
<ul>
<li>Assist with patient transport
</li>
<li>Maintain organized operating and storage areas
</li>
<li>Monitor inventory levels and report supply or equipment needs
</li>
<li>Support updates to surgical preference cards
</li>

<li>Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) &ndash; Required
</li>
<li>Minimum 2 years of recent Operating Room experience
</li>
<li>Completion of an accredited CST training program

The Operating Room Assistant Technician assists the surgical team during operating procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

The Assistant Technician provides direct patient care as a retractor/heart holder person during surgery. Duties include arranging sterile set up, adjusting lights, cleaning operating room, and skin preparation prior to surgery under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Technician also assists with moving and positioning the patient as directed by the surgical registered nurse and transporting patients and equipment.
The Assistant technician is responsible for assisting patients with personal care needs and participates in the plan of care. The Assistant technician regularly communicates observations and data collection to the Clinical Associate. This position also collects test specimens as directed according to established procedures and documents patient care activities consistent with data collection and the test performed.

The Technician provides quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of surgical technician assistant program administered by ARMC.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: BLS certification required.
EXPERIENCE: Preferred but not required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards of the hospital environment, such as exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and potential injury.

Position requires considerable standing, reaching and walking. Requires the ability to lift up to 60 lbs. Requires good hand/eye coordination and finger/hand dexterity, as well as good visual and hearing acuity and ability to maintain retraction for long periods of time.
