The Center for Democracy &amp; Technology (CDT) is now accepting applications for internships for the summer of 2026. We welcome applications from students currently enrolled in law, graduate and PhD programs with an interest in the internet and technology policy, human rights, civil rights, and civil liberties. The summer internship program is a 10-week opportunity for students to apply the principles they have learned in the classroom in real policy environments.

Summer interns work closely with CDT policy experts, researchers, technologists and attorneys on an array of civil rights, civil liberties and international human rights issues related to technology and the internet, including AI governance, competition, consumer privacy, online expression, digital surveillance, equity in technology, and elections &amp; democracy. When appropriate, summer interns are also able to join meetings with outside stakeholders.

This listing describes the application process for our Legal, Policy, Research, or Technologist Internships (working closely with at least one of several CDT teams, including AI Governance Lab, Elections &amp; Democracy, Civic Technology, Free Expression, Privacy &amp; Data, Security &amp; Surveillance, State Policy Engagement and Research).

Depending on an applicant&rsquo;s skills, expertise, and background, the tasks and projects performed over the course of the internship could include qualitative and quantitative research, legal research and analysis, and research and writing about technical and policy issues. In general, interns in PhD programs are placed in policy or research-focused roles, law students are placed in legal or policy-focused roles, technologists are placed in technical and policy roles, and policy students are placed on policy teams.

Successful candidates typically have:

Typical tasks for these roles include the following: editing CDT reports, drafting social media copy, staffing in person and online events and supporting strategic communications, researching development prospects, supporting grant applications, and otherwise supporting fundraising for a 50+ person organization. CDT works on a number of issues related to technology, including AI governance, consumer privacy, online expression, digital surveillance, civic technology, and elections &amp; democracy. When appropriate, summer interns are also able to join meetings with outside stakeholders.

2026 Development and Communications Summer Internship

<div>The ACLU seeks a Graduate or Legal Intern for the Justice Policy &amp; Government Affairs team within the National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU&rsquo;s National office in Washington D.C. This internship is remote.

Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated graduate or legal students and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship. 


The Team:

The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eight million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve change as profound in the legislative, administrative, and electoral arenas as it has accomplished through the courts. 


What You&rsquo;ll Do:

Reporting to the Division Director, the intern will support current strategic policy campaigns. The intern will assist with recommending policy options which include outcomes that align with ACLU values and strategies.

Your Day to Day

We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. The Brennan Center&rsquo;s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them &ndash; in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion. 
 
We are seeking interns to provide research, administrative, and clerical support to staff in our New York office in our Democracy program.
Note: This internship is in-person at our Washington D.C. office.
Responsibilities: 
All interns will assist with general research, administrative, and clerical work for the Brennan Center, including filing, answering phones, coordinating meetings, drafting routine correspondence and covering the reception desk. There will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work. 
 
In addition to administrative duties, specific responsibilities can include: providing support for litigation; assisting in the research for, and rollout of, reports; and aiding the program&rsquo;s advocacy efforts in Voting, Elections and Government, Judiciary, Federal Reform, Redistricting, and other related projects.
