Position Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the supervision of attending plastic surgeons to provide comprehensive care across the continuum, including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative assistance, postoperative management, outpatient follow-up, and minor in-office procedures. The Physician Assistant conducts medical history and physical examinations, establishes a presumptive diagnosis, and performs a general work-up, including ordering appropriate laboratory tests. They are responsible for managing the patient&rsquo;s medical issues following the diagnosis, working under supervision. The PA will play a vital role in optimizing patient outcomes and supporting clinical, surgical, and educational functions within the Plastic Surgery division. Furthermore, they may assist medical staff with pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative surgical procedures, as well as contribute to research projects in their assigned area.

Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment &amp; Preoperative Care
<ul>
<li>Conduct thorough histories and physical examinations for plastic surgery patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.</li>
<li>Formulate differential diagnoses and recommend diagnostic testing in consultation with supervising plastic surgeons.</li>
<li>Participate in preoperative planning, risk assessment and surgical clearance processes.</li>
<li>Document clinical evaluations and submit pre-op orders in preparation for surgery.</li>
<li>Provide pre-operative follow-up visits to ensure all patients questions are answered.</li>
</ul>
Intraoperative Support
<ul>
<li>Serve as first or second assist in the operating room, including flap procedures, breast reconstruction, aesthetic procedures, and complex wound closures.</li>
<li>Perform intraoperative tasks such as retraction, hemostasis, dissection, and suturing, skin closure as directed by the attending surgeon.</li>
<li>Monitor the patient&rsquo;s status during surgery and communicate intraoperative findings to the surgical team.</li>

Postoperative &amp; Inpatient Management
<ul>
<li>Conduct daily rounds, assess wound healing, remove drains and sutures, and identify early signs of complications.</li>
<li>Provide post-op instructions and patient education, both in person and via telehealth as needed.</li>

Outpatient &amp; Procedural Care

REQUIRED:

Minimum 1 year of experience in a clinical setting.</li><li>
Ability to meet and maintain credentialing requirements and hospital priviledges.</li><li>
Knowledge and competency in a wide range of clinical areas.</li><li>

Position Overview
Baylor University Medical Center is seeking a collaborative and motivated Neurosurgical Physician Assistant to join our growing neurosurgery team. This position offers a balanced mix of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities with an emphasis on patient management, rounding, consults, and clinical care, while also providing opportunities to assist in the operating room.

Schedule &amp; Practice Structure<ul><li>
Full-time day shift position</li><li>
Monday through Friday schedule</li><li>
Typical hours: 7:00 AM &ndash; 3:00 or 4:00 PM</li><li>
Approximately 50% inpatient / 50% outpatient responsibilities</li><li>
Two clinic days per week</li><li>
Additional call opportunities available at a set rate of $80/hour</li> 
<li>
Shared weekend call rotation: 1 in 5 weekends in-house call 7A-7P.</li><li>
Inpatient rounding and neurosurgical consults</li><li>
Management of hospitalized neurosurgical patients</li><li>
Pre-operative and post-operative patient care</li><li>
Clinic evaluation and follow-up visits (approximately 10&ndash;12 patients per clinic day)</li><li>
Coordination of care and surgical orders for multiple neurosurgeons</li><li>
First assist and second assist opportunities in the OR (approximately 20% operative time)</li><li>
Collaboration with surgeons, APPs, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams</li><li>
Ability to manage complex workflows while balancing inpatient, outpatient, and procedural responsibilities</li></ul>
