This position is a member of Advocacy Services. Under general supervision of the Advocacy Services Supervisor, provides community-based advocacy services. 
 
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following: 
<ul><li>
Provides advocacy services to include crisis intervention, emotional support and options counseling, safety planning, education of the civil and criminal justice system, court advocacy and court accompaniment</li><li>
Provides onsite advocacy services at the Fairfax Court Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (JDRDC) and General District Court including intake of client requests, court accompaniment, and coordination with court staff.</li><li>
Receives and triages client requests from the main line and other referral sources; resolves by providing advocacy services, information, safety planning, or referrals.</li><li>
Collects data and reports on goals and measures around advocacy team services</li><li>
Facilitates access to court and legal information for victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking</li><li>
Performs short-term case management which entails conducting assessment to include risk assessment, to identify needs of clients and develop a safety and service plan; supporting clients in accessing resources and services; monitoring service plan and documenting all case management activities in the client&rsquo;s record</li><li>
Represents DSVS in the coordinated community response to domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking by participating in various committees, workgroups and outreach efforts both locally and regionally</li><li>
Serves as liaison and subject matter expert on domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking to include staffing cases</li><li>
Provides training and technical assistance for the county and community agencies</li><li>
Develops and provides needed court training to DSVS staff and volunteers as it pertains to victims of domestic and sexual violence and stalking</li><li>
Assists Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) Line follow-up tasks such as reviewing messages and assigning cases to staff</li><li>
Works with Advocacy Services Supervisor to assess staff and volunteers training needs and provide or arrange training necessary to develop skills and knowledge of victim advocates and volunteers</li><li>
Provides supervisory assistance and leadership in the absence of the Advocacy Services Supervisor, assists with setting up the weekly schedule, and ensures adequate coverage.</li><li>
Provides rotational coverage of the program&rsquo;s 24-hour crisis lines and responds to requests for hospital accompaniment</li><li>
Performs other duties as assigned</li></ul>
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:<ul><li>
Knowledge of principles of interpersonal violence accountability and community resources available to those who perpetrate violence</li><li>
Knowledge of the relationship between trauma impact and domestic violence problems</li><li>
Knowledge about best practices and domestic violence intervention particularly in safety planning</li><li>
Ability to assist other professionals with connecting clients to advocacy services</li><li>
Have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills</li><li>
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, county officials, public and private sector organizations, community groups and the general public</li><li>
Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with partner agencies includes court services, legal services, law enforcement, shelter, and other service providers in Fairfax County.</li><li>

<div>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a human services field OR minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia). 
 
In order to be evaluated for positions in the Family Services Occupational Group, individuals who do not meet the degree requirement at the time of application for employment must be in their last semester of a degree program that will meet the requirements listed above. 
 
Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class may require specific certification(s) or experience prior to employment and/or the ability to acquire necessary certification(s) within a specified time period following employment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<ul><li>
Master&rsquo;s degree in social work or a related human services field</li><li>
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible, directly-related professional experience in the social services or human services field.</li><li>
At least three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience working with victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking and/or human trafficking.</li><li>

 Job Summary:
 
 
 
 The Emergency Services (ES) Primary Advocate is responsible for providing advocacy, support, and information to victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and/or human trafficking/sexual exploitation accessing Cornerstone&rsquo;s (CAS) 24/7 shelter/hotel, crisis line, and walk-in services. This advocacy position utilizes trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive practices to provide supportive wraparound services for participants. The services are inclusive of safety and goal planning, arrangements for Cornerstone&rsquo;s internal and community external services, and survivor-led advocacy with systems such as housing, social services, medical, immigration, and civil/criminal justice. The ES Primary Advocate works within a team setting to maintain a welcoming, safe, clean, accessible, and inclusive environment for the families and people we serve.
 
 
 Hours/Scheduling:
 
 This is a full-time position which requires flexible scheduling to support participants&rsquo; schedules and needs. Shifts may include evenings and weekends as assigned by the supervisor. This position includes an on-call rotating schedule to assist with after-hours staff support and direct service
 
 coverage.
 
 
 
 Experience/Qualifications:
 
 Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in psychology, social work, or human service-related field or comparable combination of career and life experiences. One or more years of experience providing direct crisis response services in a trauma-informed setting.

 Understanding of trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive care practices with a focus on the impact of domestic violence, sexual violence, and/or human trafficking/sexual exploitation.

 Understanding of the human services delivery system emphasizing serving diverse, marginalized and/or underrepresented communities.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 General understanding of crime victim&rsquo;s rights, civil remedies, and the criminal justice systems with the understanding additional training will be provided.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Ability to communicate in a trauma-informed, calm, and deescalating manner with participants in crisis to assist in meeting their needs, provide support, and connect them to resources available that enhances safety.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 
 Preferred 40-hour sexual assault training or the ability to complete training within 6
 
 months.

 Duties and Essential
 
 Functions:
 
 
 
 
 <ul>

 Maintains professional and confidential survivor-centered support, advocacy, information, and safety planning for victims/survivors (v/s) through phone, in-person, and walk-in services.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Welcomes new participants into the shelter/hotel by processing new intakes, informing them of available services, and providing guidelines for shelter living.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Provides wrap around services by assisting participants with accessing internal and
 
 external&nbsp;
 
 resources inclusive of obtaining needed documents, basic needs, housing, transportation, medical, and interpreter services.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Meets weekly with participants to complete informational interviews, goal planning, and advocacy requests. Briefly check-ins with the participant several days in the week to provide support, answer questions, and advocacy as needed.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Participates in weekly wraparound meetings with other assigned advocates to keep others apprised of participants goals, requests, barriers, and other relevant information.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Accompanies and supports participants when requested, in attending virtual, phone, or in-person meetings inclusive of housing, social services, and systems advocacy with other entities.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Answers crisis line calls providing information, support, and referrals from v/s or concerned persons and systems personnel (medical, social services, law enforcement, etc.) seeking to assist v/s.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Screens potential shelter/hotel participants requesting emergency safe housing options when bed space/hotel is available. Utilizes the DO process when CAS is unable to accommodate a v/s.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Responds professionally to Law Enforcement Intervention contacts via email or over the phone and follows-up with the v/s within program guidelines.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Assists current residents with basic living skills such as cleaning, meal preparations, and caring for children. And assists in cleaning, safety checks, and other tasks necessary to prepare apartment spaces during participant turnover.
 
 
 </li>
 <li>
 
 
 Assures data entry is completed accurately in Apricot database and other tracking methods. Properly document all critical incidents: child protection reports, emergency response calls, participant injury/concerns and other documentation as assigned by supervisor.

A patient advocate for IME Guards will accompany a claimant (injury victim) during a medical appointment given by a doctor hired by a defense lawyer in a lawsuit.
