The Town of Berwick is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Summer Camp Counselor to join our Parks & Recreation team. This position works under the direct supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director and plays a key role in providing engaging, innovative, and inclusive recreation and enrichment opportunities for youth grades K-8. This position is ideal for someone who wants to make a difference in the community while working in a fun, team-oriented environment. As a Counselor, you aren’t just a supervisor—you’re a coach, a craft expert, a professional tag player, and a mentor. You’ll help create a safe, inclusive, and ridiculously fun environment for local youth to thrive in.

This is a Seasonal, non-exempt position with a up to 40-hour work week.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the Fun: Organize and facilitate daily activities including sports, arts & crafts, water games, and field trips.
  • Safety First: Maintain constant supervision of campers, grades K-8, to ensure a safe and positive environment.
  • Be a Role Model: Model respectful behavior, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm.
  • Problem Solve: Help campers navigate social interactions and resolve minor conflicts with a cool head.
  • Teamwork: Work closely with the Camp Director and fellow counselors to keep the daily schedule running smoothly.

What We’re Looking For

  • Energy: You can keep up with a group of active kids in the summer heat.
  • Reliability: You show up on time, every day, ready to engage.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with children (coaching, babysitting, or previous camp work) is a huge plus.
  • Certifications: CPR/First Aid certification is preferred (but we can help you get certified before camp starts!).

Schedule & Perks

SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Camp Directors, Counselors will assist in planning, organizing, directing, and participating in recreational activities for children grades K-9. Counselors are responsible for supervising campers, maintaining discipline and safety of all campers and administering basic first aid. Counselors will follow daily schedules for indoor and outdoor activities including games, crafts, field trips and events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Carry out daily camp schedule under the direct supervision of the Camp Directors.
  • Maintains safety and discipline of all campers
  • Leads, organizes, and participates in crafts, games, field trips & events and all other activities for assigned group of campers.
  • Supervises campers while on field trips, during transportation and while on Town of Berwick property.
  • Preforms basic first aid when necessary.
  • Ensures campers are accounted for at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of camp facilities, supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrate effective time management to ensure activities stay on schedule.
  • Complete accident and incident reports when necessary.
  • Attends all required staff meetings and staff development training sessions.
  • Collaborates with department team in a positive, professional, and productive manner.
  • Must get along with others and work in a professional manner.
  • Maintains regular, predictable, and reliable attendance.
  • Places an emphasis on safety, efficiency, quality, and productivity.
  • Follows all Town and Department policies.
  • Professionally performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

· Strong leadership, communication and organizational skills

· Proficient in conflict resolution

· Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to various and diverse groups and individuals, including children.

· Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, safety precautions and techniques related to summer camp operations.

· Knowledge of health and safety practices and procedures at recreation parks and facilities

· Basic first aid.

ABILITY TO:

· Act as a positive role model to campers.

· Remain engaged and attentive to campers at all times.

· Organize and manage children grades K-9 while remaining positive, patient and alert.

· Respond to various situation, including emergencies.

· Plan, supervise, coordinate, and instruct age-appropriate activities for campers.

· Work collaboratively as a team.

· Establish and maintain professional effective working relationships with coworkers.

· Professionally & tactfully conduct self when interacting with disgruntled members of the public.

· Communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral forms.

· Function independently to exercise initiative and creativity within the broad scope of job description & municipal and department policies.

  • Attend any required or recommended courses or training.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education/Training:

· Prior experience working with children preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Other:

· Adult and Child First Aid and AED certification or ability to obtain certification upon hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically capable of being active outdoors for an extended period of time and the ability to perform outdoor activities including but not limited to standing, walking, running, swimming and lifting equipment.
  • Balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching, and stooping may also be required.
  • Most work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to various types of weather conditions, such as heat, rain.
  • Some work may occasionally require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work may periodically involve long hours in a moderate to high stress environment.
