Role Overview
The Group Security Operations Engineer plays a pivotal role in uplifting the overall cybersecurity maturity across a group of 31 autonomous Business Units (BUs) – and counting - due to acquisitive nature of the group. Operating as part of a VIG Group-level SWAT team, this individual works hands-on with local IT and VIG shared central IT resources to strengthen their technical security capabilities, embed best practices, and help deliver key security improvement projects.
This is a technical, collaborative, and relationship-driven role. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in implementing practical security solutions while building strong trust and rapport with local IT stakeholders. They will guide and support rather than dictate - ensuring each BU can operate securely, efficiently, and autonomously while aligning with Group Cybersecurity objectives and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a trusted security partner to local IT teams across all BUs, providing hands-on technical support and advisory guidance across a wide range of operational security initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with IT managers, administrators, and business leaders to promote a culture of shared accountability for cybersecurity.
  • Lead or support the implementation of fit-for-purpose security controls across diverse technology environments, ensuring they are practical, sustainable, and aligned to business needs.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects in areas such as vulnerability management, patch management, identity security, access control, backup and recovery, endpoint protection, and monitoring.
  • Work alongside local IT teams to establish repeatable security processes — ensuring tasks such as patching, MFA enforcement, access reviews, and backup restore testing become part of ongoing operations.
  • Identify and address security risks and control gaps, working collaboratively to design and implement pragmatic remediation measures.
  • Act as an escalation and enablement point for security incidents or investigations, coordinating with the Group SOC, MSSP, or external partners as needed.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and technical enablement to help upskill local IT staff, leaving lasting capability within each BU.
  • Support security tooling rollout projects, from proof of concept to operational handover, ensuring successful local adoption and maintenance.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Group security playbooks, standards, and operational templates, reflecting lessons learned and promoting consistency.
  • Engage in regular check-ins, reviews, and workshops to maintain visibility of security maturity progress across the group.
  • Represent the Group Cybersecurity function with professionalism, empathy, and technical credibility - balancing governance expectations with practical delivery.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Security Operations, Infrastructure Security, or System Administration with demonstrable security exposure.
  • Proven ability to implement and manage security tools and processes such as vulnerability management, patching, identity management, or endpoint protection.
  • Very strong underlying general IT Operations knowledge and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 / Entra ID, Intune, and modern cloud security principles.
  • Experience supporting or leading security projects across multiple business entities or geographically dispersed teams.
  • Familiarity with recognized frameworks such as NIST CSF, CIS Controls v8, or ISO 27001 Annex A.
  • Relevant certifications (CompTIA Security+, Microsoft SC-200, or equivalent) are advantageous.

Key Attributes
  • Excellent relationship-builder and communicator, able to gain trust and cooperation across diverse business units.
  • Influential without authority, using credibility, empathy, and collaboration to drive progress.
  • Hands-on technical problem solver, with the ability to translate strategy into operational execution.
  • Pragmatic and solution-oriented, balancing security risk with operational realities.
  • Passionate about helping others succeed, transferring knowledge and building self-sufficiency within local teams.
  • Adaptable to different business contexts, technologies, and maturity levels.

Measures of Success
  • Strong relationships and trust established with local IT teams.
  • Visible improvement in BU security posture and maturity levels.
  • Consistent delivery of key security initiatives within agreed SLAs.
