This position will be filled at the Security Manager 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned at the current level.

Security Specialist 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

Associate Laboratory Directorate Defense Protection - Security Integration Office (ALDDP-INT) is seeking a motivated security manager to oversee the nine-member Access Control Office (ACO) associated with Technical Area 55-a central function among the laboratory's key missions.

The security manager is the first line manager and team leader for a diverse control center enabling the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production. Responsibilities include maintaining a compliant and effective security environment for the important work being accomplished at the facility, which requires fostering a strong and cohesive team of employees.

The ACO Team Leader must be detail, performance and results oriented, with a track record of effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. They must be able to demonstrate and promote responsibility for safety, security and quality standards in all situations. The team leader is an advisor to senior manufacturing leadership and reports to the Security Integration Office Leader (Security Manager 4).

The successful candidate will:
  • Develop and maintain a broad understanding of security policies and procedures governing the operational area and local access control.
  • Develop and maintain a familiarity with procedures associated with plant operations.
  • Assist and potentially lead process improvement efforts to enhance access control and support of workers, sub-contractors and vendors.
  • Work closely with adjacent managers and stakeholders to facilitate their requirements if applicable and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Sustain an effective training program for ACO workers and ensure their administrative and other needs are met or advocated.
  • Influence LANL's culture by acting as a professional role model for employees and as a representative of the security institution.
  • Perform as a security point of contact between supported organizations and various security agencies, either directly or through positive referrals.
  • Brief organizations and their management teams on the security posture and any emergent security challenges and proposed remedial action.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of security functions including personnel security, access control, security area management, corrective action implementation, inspections, self-assessment, risk assessment/mitigation and information protection.
  • Skill in effective written and oral communications, evidenced by presentations, topical papers and training development/instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning and implementation, financial resource management, personnel supervision and development, and continuous process improvement.
  • Ability to establish high performance teams, to include conducting internal coaching and successful cross-organization collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills focused on mentoring team members and managing customer relationships.

Education and Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience in sensitive area entry and circulation control
  • Experience working with Physical Access Control Systems, learning management systems, databases and other web-based work platforms
  • Understanding of Department of Energy security policies, practices and procedures
  • Active federal security clearance
  • Experience in technical systems integration and configuration management
  • Demonstrated skill in supporting executive leadership and/or robust customer relationships

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to frequently visit multiple office buildings/administrative areas/briefing facilities to conduct assessments, meetings or visitor support.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
