Key Responsibilities


Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position:

  • Providing building and grounds security; securing buildings, and protecting against theft, vandalism,
    inappropriate entry, fire hazards, acts of violence, etc.
  • Controlling access to institutions, installations and facilities; checking identification, vehicles, packages, etc.
  • Periodically inspect buildings, grounds fences, gates and all other possible means of entrance and exit.
  • Coordinating law enforcement and investigative efforts with federal, state and/or local agencies.
  • Conducting investigations into allegations of a variety of inappropriate activities, rules infractions or illegal
    actions.
  • Assessing situations and applying appropriate interventions to prevent or resolve crisis situations.
  • Maintaining safety, security, and surveillance.
  • Monitoring of individuals, staff, visitor movements, materials, and equipment located on our campus.
  • Driving a state vehicle to patrol the facility.
  • Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Exercising peace officer authority in accordance with Special Function Officer designation outlined in UCA
    53-13-105.


Qualifications


Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain POST certification as a Special Functions Officer within twelve months of being hired. (Please click on this link for information regarding the POST requirements. ( http://post.utah.gov/prospective-officers/.)
  • Proficient skills in using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • One or more years of work experience in report writing.

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications:

  • Interest in developing a rapport with individuals and staff.
  • Ability to resort to approved physical techniques as a last result when necessary where other de-escalation tactics have failed and/or are not feasible within the context of the situation.
  • One or more years experience working with intellectually disabled individuals.

The Utah State Developmental Center will absorb the initial related costs to become POST Certified, subject to a training and employment agreement.
