JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Public Safety Officer I provides for the safety and security of Winterthur staff, guests, visitors, Collections, as well as assets. Public Safety will provide guidance in a professional demeanor to bring all relevant situations to a resolution. They will respond to all emergencies, as well as assist in the de-escalation of conflicts on the Winterthur campus. As the first interaction a guest has with a Winterthur employee is often a member of the Public Safety Department, it is important that they provide a warm and welcoming demeanor to guests, visitors, and suppliers.

Compensation: $15.25/hour Room for advancement, opportunity to join Winterthur Fire Department, and bonus' available for those with EMT certification

Work Schedule: Flexible availability, Monday through Sunday

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to and investigate any type of incident involving the safety of staff, guests, assets or property.
  • Provide first aid and/or CPR in the event of a medical emergency and provide guidance and physical assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation. Follow existing emergency procedures for evacuations due to any fire, flood emergency or sudden and severe weather conditions that may arise.
  • Exhibit strong customer service skills during any situation, including responding to inquiries from guests, visitors, and suppliers.
  • Maintain vigilance for and take pro-active steps to correct potentially hazardous situations.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures governing people, vehicles, and property by all persons on Winterthur property.
  • Responsible for monitoring the security of Winterthur via computerized security systems
  • Galleries – monitor 1st and 2nd floor Galleries, respond to emergencies that arise.
  • House – monitor access points and floors open to patrons during self-guided tours, provide elevator escorts as needed, respond to emergencies that may arise.
  • Motor Patrol – Patrol Winterthur grounds and required buildings respond to emergencies that arise; including assisting in the evacuation of Museum, Gallery, and Wing.
  • Main Gate – Screens entry when not open to the public; greets and directs first time guests to Visitor Center; greet outside contractors and ensure proper direction or escort to destination; answers incoming calls and provides assistance as necessary.
  • Museum – Securing exterior doors as needed, responds to medical emergencies; responds, investigates, and complete written reports on injured guests and employees. Evening & Night – Walk Museum Wing, Gallery, and Research Building to monitor exterior doors and check for safety issues.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: High school diploma or equivalent proof of education with some customer service, safety, or law enforcement experience or the ability to learn public safety duties quickly, no prior experience often is acceptable.

Preferred Experience:

First Aid Certification with 1+ years related public safety

Knowledge/Skills:

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to work within the confines of the Museum or other Collection areas that require tight security and attention to detail.
  • Must enjoy dealing with the public in a Cultural Property setting.
  • Must be capable of performing C.P.R. /First Aid after training
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time; potentially 8 hours or more.
  • Must be able to sit in and operate a SUV or Pick-Up type of vehicle for an 8 hour shift.
  • Must be able to climb multiple stairs (9 floors), walk or stand for extended periods of time (8 hours).
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder.
