Seeking Residential (live-in) Summer Camp Nurse (RN) – Special Needs Camp, Groton MA

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: We’re looking for experienced Registered Nurses (RN) who have the desire and ability to live and work at our residential Christian summer camp for special needs adults and neurotypical children.

Grotonwood is a day and residential (overnight) summer camp serving adults age 18-75 with a variety of physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities through one-week residential camping programs. We also serve neurotypical children age 5-17. This is a deeply rewarding job for someone looking for seasonal work in a summer camp that offers diversified camping to under-resourced communities.

Ideal for nurses seeking a break from a hospital, clinical, or school nurse setting! Our camp nurses allow our campers and seasonal staff to succeed at camp by ensuring that their health needs are met in a safe, efficient, caring, and nurturing manner.

HEALTH CARE TEAM: Our team consists of two residential RNs and three Medical Assistants (typically pre-med and nursing students). Additionally, we have a team of returning per diem RNs and LPN staff that work to support the ebb and flow of our camping programs throughout the summer as needed.

SUMMER CAMP DATES & HOURS OF OPERATION: Staff orientation will occur between June 11-19, 2026. Camp opens to the public June 21 and closes August 21, 2026 . Though we prefer to hire staff for the full ten-week contract, applicants who are able to commit to a 6-8 week contract will be considered.

SALARY & WORK PERKS: $1750-1950.00 per week commensurate with experience/credentials.

Includes all meals, private housing, free parking, MA license reimbursement (if applicable), first aid & CPR reimbursement (if applicable), uniform (t-shirts), use of camp facilities outside of working hours (staff gym, trails and beach etc), exclusive access to a Golf Cart for travel around the campgrounds to administer necessary first aid and/or medication.

PLUS! Bring your kids to camp - Grotonwood offers FREE day camp for kids living in your household (value of $4,230.00 per child in tuition) and deeply discounted rates for overnight camp.

Day Camp operated Monday - Friday from 7:30am to 6pm daily.

COMPLETION BONUS: $900 Completion Bonus (pro-rated and based on a minimum nine-week commitment).

MINIMUM HOURS/TYPICAL SCHEDULE: Nurses will typically work 65-70 hours per week whilst campers are onsite.

  • Sundays (check in day) from 10am to 10pm
  • Monday to Thursday from 6:30am to 9:30pm
  • Friday (check out day) from 6:30am to 2:30pm

TIME-OFF/BREAKS: Residential RNs receive one night off mid-week (typically Wednesday or Thursday from 4-10pm), plus a 1-2 hour break each day. Our residential nurses take from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning off each week.

LICENSURE: Licensure in Massachusetts or nurses who are licensed in other states may apply for a Massachusetts license by endorsement and receive reimbursement from the camp.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the safe transfer of campers using mechanized lift - typically during the first 1-2 weeks of camp only.
  • Support campers with management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma
  • Assist with overseeing the daily operation of the health center - med-passes, drop-ins, first aid, triage, follow-ups, clinical admin (calls, reviewing charts etc)
  • Monitor health of all campers and staff throughout each session
  • Ensure safe medication packaging, storage and administration in accordance with Board of Health requirements, camp policies and procedures. Medication is pulled and administered manually (Grotonwood does NOT use automated medication dispensing systems)
  • Manually maintain complete and up-to-date health records including incident reports and Medical Administration Reports (Grotonwood does NOT operate an EMR system)
  • RNs will alternate 'on-call' responsibilities at night, which consists of going to bed with the camp radio in case of emergency (nurses do not typically participate in night shifts with the exception of the first 2 weeks of camp)
  • Manage and support medically prescribed, and texture-modified diets (ground, moist, pureed, chopped)
  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessments to campers and staff and intervene as appropriate and in accordance with standing orders/protocols
  • Respond quickly to all medical emergencies and seek additional medical support as needed
  • Communicate any and all health concerns to the resident Camp Directors
  • Supervise and mentor Medical Assistants (typically, pre-med and nursing school students)
  • Follow set schedule for time off (RNs must be on site on days when campers are on site)
  • Participate in and lead staff training on universal precautions and rescue medications, including epi pens, inhalers, diabetes, epilepsy and basic health management specific to camp health and safety
  • Order medical supplies and keep the infirmary stocked as needed

  • Strong personal integrity, adaptability, emotional intelligence, enthusiasm, patience, endurance, and self-control
  • Ability to understand and adhere to Grotonwood's policies and procedures
  • Willingness and ability to seek and accept supervision and guidance from non-clinical staff
  • Ready to embrace and accept differences in religion/ age/ ethnicity/ culture/ race/ gender/ sexual orientation and/or other diversities.
  • Willingness and ability to treat all campers and staff fairly regardless of identity, ability, background, and/or preferences

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUMMER CAMP NURSE (RN):

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience serving geriatric or special needs populations in a rehab or assisted living facility essential
  • Must have current Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner (RN or NP) Massachusetts License*
  • Must have experience with heavy med-passes/administration
  • Able to use sound professional judgement, take initiative and be proactive
  • Proficient in speaking, reading and writing in the English language
  • Must be able and willing to work long days (typically, 6:30am to 9:30pm with breaks)
  • Must be available to work a minimum of six-eight weeks (between June 12th to August 21st, 2026)
  • Must have and maintain valid First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Previous experience in a camp setting desirable
  • Must pass all background checks as required for seasonal employees of an organization working with vulnerable populations
  • Desire to work with children and adults with disabilities in a residential camp setting essential
  • Computer literate: Microsoft or Apple office suite. Ability to learn how to use CampBrain, Grotonwood’s camp enrollment software

HEALTH CENTER SUPERVISION: The Camp Director and Health Care Supervisor provide medical supervision, support and oversight to RNs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift camp equipment and janitorial products and supplies, up to fifty pounds.
