Senior Accountant

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Account will be responsible for day-to-day accounting functions, while assisting the Chief Financial Officer in developing budgets, producing timely financial forecasts, managing the month-end financial closing and reports, maintaining an effective system of financial and other internal controls, processing payroll, and preparing the Form 990 and other public reports.

Overview of Society

Founded in 1946, the Society for Corporate Governance is a 501(c)(6) association of approximately 3,700 members dedicated to effective corporate governance by empowering professionals with programming, content, benchmarking, peer-to-peer networking, professional development opportunities, as well as engaging with policymakers on corporate governance and disclosure matters at the federal, state, and international levels.

The Society operates through its national office and through 21 chapters across the United States. Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Senior Accountant will include the following:

Planning, Budgeting, and Reporting

  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in developing the Society’s annual operating plan and budget, preparing monthly financial results, and preparing quarterly financial results and full-year forecasts vs. prior year and budget.

Accounting & Controls

  • Maintain the Society’s general ledger and other financial records, including processing (i) cash receipts and cash disbursements, (ii) accounts receivable and accounts payable, (iii) aging of accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Reconcile the general ledger to member, partner, conference, investment, and chapter records.
  • Incorporate and reconcile ancillary systems’ (e.g., (iMIS, HubSpot) data into the general ledger records.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and collaborative interdepartmental reports (membership data coupled with financial data. sponsorships, etc.)
  • Implement effective accounting policies, financial controls, and other internal controls
  • Process payroll, employee expenses, and employee credit card reimbursements.

Management

  • Work closely with the Chief Financial Officer in interfacing with the independent auditor, investment managers, and other third-party financial service providers
  • Build strong working relationships at the national and chapter levels, as well as with the Society’s partners and vendors.
  • Reflect the Society’s culture of transparency, accountability, respect, and continuous learning.

Other

  • Perform such other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Chief Financial Officer and President & CEO to support the achievement of the Society’s strategic, operating, and financial goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Experience with professional associations, membership organizations, or non-profit organizations strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, experience with, or interest in corporate governance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and software.
  • Familiarity with other technologies, such as iMIS and HubSpot, supporting membership organizations and associations a plus.

Salary, Benefits, Location

This is a full-time position in NYC, but may also be available on a remote basis. The base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience and final location. The position is bonus eligible. The Society works a 35-hour work week and we offer a generous benefits package including health, dental and vision, 401k match, and paid time off, in addition to federal holidays.
