Senior Civil Engineer – Wastewater Operations & Maintenance

Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Civil Engineer to join its Wastewater Operations team within the System Operations Planning and Analysis (SOPA) section. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of engineering, operations and maintenance, and public service — giving you the opportunity to directly shape the performance, reliability, and long-term sustainability of one of the region's most critical infrastructure systems.

Reporting to the Wastewater Operations Supervisor, you will serve as a hands-on technical expert. You will work collaboratively with planners, operations and maintenance crews, and capital project teams to solve complex operational challenges and ensure that SPU's wastewater assets are maintained to the highest standards. Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert for wastewater infrastructure supporting crews and planners to evaluate real-time wastewater system operations and generate operational changes and troubleshooting recommendations to ensure continuous system performance.
  • Provide both in-office and field support to planners and field crews, ensuring rehabilitation and maintenance projects are scheduled and executed in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and best management practices.
  • Conduct facility performance assessments, system analyses, and evaluations of maintenance options; advise on product selection and sizing.
  • Act as key liaison between SPU’s Drainage and Wastewater (DWW) System Management Division, DWW Planning and Program Management Division, Utility Operations and Maintenance Division, DWW System Maintenance Division, Project Delivery and Engineering Branch, and other divisions to ensure optimal wastewater performance.

Qualifications

Experience: Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience.

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology — or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the required background to perform the work.

License, Certification and Other Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with municipal wastewater systems
  • Experience collaborating with field maintenance and operations staff
  • Infrastructure condition assessment experience
  • Familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and interpreting real-time operational data
  • Capital project design and construction experience for drainage and/or wastewater systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Additional Information

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Schedule
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Hybrid schedule with remote work flexibility (minimum 3 days/week in-office). Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The salary range for this position is $74.99 - $87.31 hourly.
