Job Summary:
Under the direction of the associate vice chancellor for research, develops, implements, and supports special projects and operational planning, preparedness, and optimization initiatives of the research mission of the medical center. Cohesively optimizes the work of content experts within respective areas.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of of progressive research administration experience. Preferred experience in an academic medical center. Master's degree preferred. Education cannot be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The senior director must have strong leadership skills and experience working in research administration in a higher education environment with preferred experience in an academic medical center. Interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, management, staff, and other customers. Ability to handle potentially sensitive issues that may affect the reputation of UMMC or the research mission. The senior director must have strong organizational and management skills as well as excellent communication skills. Ability to effectively handle challenging situations and manage multiple priorities. High degree of motivation, ownership, and interest in serving the needs of the university and research mission. Strong demonstrated capabilities in planning, budgeting, negotiating, and carrying out institutional initiatives.
Responsibilities

In conjunction with the associate and assistant vice chancellors for research, develops and implements short and long-range organizational objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures.

Work across departments and units to develop a more streamlined research continuum within the institution from pre-award to post-award.

Directs, coordinates, and manages the day to day activities and resources of special projects. Identifies project parameters, performance metrics, and deadlines for project objectives.

Engages departmental directors and research leadership to move projects forward. Coordinates with operational support services, including finance, compliance, legal, DIS, human resources, and marketing functions to ensure timely and successful completion of all aspects of projects.

Monitors programmatic implementation and execution. Compiles and analyzes various types of information into reports for executive leadership, department and research directors, and other members of medical center leadership.

Advise and assist the associate vice chancellor for research in the creation, restructuring, and administration of offices, centers, core facilities, and committees within the research mission framework.

Advance the research mission of the university and promote further integration with the healthcare and education missions.

Promote and coordinate multidisciplinary collaborations, partnerships with outside entities, and recruitment and retention of highly productive researchers.

Ensure integration and alignment of activities with the institutional plan.
