About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Graphic Designer to support the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the IRS. You will be a key player on a design team responsible for producing complex and high-visibility publications, including mandated annual reports to the U.S. Congress.
This role requires a designer who can deliver effective, innovative creative solutions that adhere to the client's brand and mission to help taxpayers. You will work on a variety of production-focused and creative tasks, ensuring the delivery of professional, high-quality materials for high-level stakeholders, including members of Congress and IRS executives.
Key Responsibilities:
Design Production:
- Lay out multi-page publications using provided templates, primarily focusing on reports and publications rather than creative strategy.
- Reformat data into clear and accurate charts, graphs, and tables.
- Create and manage print-ready files, web-friendly interactive PDFs, and proofs for complex documents, such as the 500-page Annual Report to Congress.
- Handle publications with a high volume of figures and footnotes, including one project with an estimated 4,000 footnotes.
Design Creative (As-Needed):
- On an as-needed basis, contribute to tasks requiring creative strategy, such as redesigning publications, updating templates, developing infographics, and creating outreach materials.
Printing and Deliverables:
- Provide up to 30 professionally produced, full-color, spiral-bound advance copies for key Reports to Congress publications.
- Coordinate the printing, shipping, and delivery of advance copies to various locations, including a federal building in Washington, D.C..
Project Management and Communication:
- Provide proactive customer service and maintain effective communication throughout all tasks.
- Support project coordination and provide regular status reports using a TAS-approved project management platform.
- Collaborate with the TAS team to develop production calendars at the start of major report cycles.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- A minimum of five years of professional design experience.
- A varied portfolio demonstrating successful performance on large-scale projects and a range of technical skills, including design, illustrations, infographics, and charts/graphs.
- Demonstrable project management skills.
- Proficiency in the latest versions of Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Illustrator and InDesign), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Up-to-date knowledge of industry standards for digital publishing, including the creation of interactive PDFs with hyperlinks and bookmarks.
- Knowledgeable about creating documents that incorporate Section 508 compliance features.
- Ability to securely transfer files up to 50 MB using FIPS 140-2 compliant or FedRAMP-certified services.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with federal government entities.
- Familiarity with social media platforms.
Availability & Communication Requirements:
This role requires a high level of flexibility and responsiveness, especially during peak periods.
- Core Hours: Must be available for standard communications Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time. During this time, a 24-hour response time to emails and calls is expected.
- Critical Production Periods: For up to eight weeks per fiscal year, you must be available for support after core business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Critical Period Response Time: During these defined critical periods, a response to emails or calls is expected within two hours to establish next steps, regardless of the time or day.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
