Description

Under general supervision, the Laboratory Analyst – Senior plans and maintains comprehensive quality assurance and quality control programs to ensure compliance with federal and local regulations and laboratory certification by developing policies and procedures; conducts audits; develops training and makes presentations; evaluates data; and develops and maintains program documentation.

Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.

Examples of Duties

  • Reviews all analytical data produced by the laboratory for compliance and policies; analyzes data trends and generates laboratory reports; reviews quality system documents; performs data, personnel, and quality system audits to identify data integrity; trains staff on system revisions, new methods, ethics and data integrity; communicates with state regulators to schedule audits; ensures timely accreditation renewal and reporting of self and data.

  • Performs bacteriological and chemical testing of water, wastewater and pretreatments samples for program; prepares reagents and standards; evaluates samples to determine appropriate analysis; maintains, troubleshoots, and calibrates equipment and instruments; researches, develops, and implements testing methods; provides leadership, supervision, and technical direction to staff; ensures all reportable samples are collected and analyzed.

  • Maintains required records in a court admissible fashion by maintaining and developing appropriate computer spreadsheets, databases, forms, and documents; ensures appropriate review of reporting records, bills, and filing for data audits.

  • Maintains equipment and chemical inventory by evaluating consumables for the department and water treatment plant lab operations; researches, evaluates, obtains quotes on, and orders instrumentation and equipment; provides technical support and on-going verification of field equipment; performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of lab and field equipment; coordinates external maintenance services with external metrological; performs internal calibration.

  • Provides customer service and technical support for clients by responding to phone and internet inquiries regarding water/wastewater quality; responds to lab customer's questions; provides presentations and educational outreach to schools, communities, and trade associations regarding water and the environment; provides technical expertise and training to other city divisions.

  • Assists in various environment programs by maintaining hazardous materials certification and help operate the city hazardous waste program; performs sampling of city lakes, streams, and ponds in support of storm water group programs; provides presentations and educational outreach on recycling and household hazardous waste to schools and community; participates in pretreatment compliance site visits.

Experience and Training

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university with 24 hours of college chemistry and 16 hours of college microbiology/biology.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience as a laboratory analyst or in a similar position.

Certificates and Licenses Required

  • State of Texas (TCEQ) Class D Wastewater Operator's license

  • Class D Waterworks Operator's license

  • Certified Laboratory Analyst - Level D or similar
  • 40 hr HAZWOPER certification within 6 months of hire
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License or ability to obtain prior to employment
