Hiring Range: $46,762 - $54,147/Annually
Hours: 6:30 am - 3:00 pm Monday-Friday; (Some Evenings/ Weekends Required)

The purpose of this position is to serve on a crew dedicated to the construction, installation and maintenance of park properties and amenities through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. This includes but is not limited to the operation of equipment in support of construction, maintenance, community development, and/or park facility projects in the City's park system. This is accomplished by receiving and taking appropriate direction on written and verbal instructions; and interpreting instructions to effectively complete assigned tasks.

Primary responsibilities include construction trades such as carpentry and masonry, mowing, cleaning, and maintenance of parks and park facilities; park inspections; preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and courts; operating and maintaining park maintenance equipment (blowers, weed eaters, commercial mowing equipment including zero turn mowers, tractors, packer trucks, etc.). Employee will be required to use a City issued smart phone and asset management software (Cityworks) to document needed and completed work. Employee must be reliable and punctual (ability to work assigned schedule).

Responsible for leading a crew, to include assigning and inspecting work; performing cleaning services; performing technical work, service checks, and preventative maintenance on electronic equipment and vehicles; administering and scheduling repairs; operating light-duty equipment and power tools; installing and maintaining equipment and related devices; picking up trash; maintaining supplies; taking inventory and stocking equipment; researching information; preparing routine reports; maintaining records and databases; and performing related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lead worker on a crew responsible for the construction, installation and maintenance of park properties and amenities.
  • Work will include construction trades such as carpentry and masonry, mowing, cleaning, and maintenance of parks and park facilities; park inspections; preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and courts.
  • Performs technical work, service checks, and preventative maintenance on landscaping, turf care, and other applicable equipment, systems, and vehicles; administers and schedules repairs; tracks equipment recalls; replaces defective equipment or parts; and operating and maintaining park maintenance equipment (blowers, weed eaters, commercial mowing equipment including zero turn mowers, tractors, packer trucks, etc.).
  • Maintains supply inventory; stocks equipment; gathers and compiles information, prepares routine reports; maintains records and databases; and proofs work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provides customer service; responds to customer questions and concerns; resolves or escalates issues; and provides information on policies and procedures.
  • Small engine repair and maintenance.
  • Driving a truck with a trailer between work sites.
  • Using sprayers or spreaders to apply herbicide or snow/ice treatment.
  • Must be reliable and punctual (ability to work assigned schedule).
  • Entering data and maintaining records.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
  • Three years of equipment operation/driving or specialized maintenance experience based on assignment.
  • A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Incumbents must complete job-related and/or safety training based on assignment, such as (but not limited to) lock out/tag out, confined space entry, ladder safety, IMSA certifications based on assignment, work zone safety, respirator and emergency evacuation training.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Basic proficiency with computers and smart phone technology.
  • Available to work some nights, weekends, holidays, rotating or flex schedules, and during inclement weather.
  • Experience safely, properly operating commercial landscaping equipment including (but not limited to) tractors, zero turn mowers, trimmers, blowers, edgers hedge trimmers, and chain saws.
  • Experience driving and backing landscape trailers.
  • Ability to read and write; understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and understand routine operation of machines.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a fast paced, physically challenging environment.
  • Good work ethic, attitude, and judgment skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of daily assignments.
  • A valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Commercial Landscape Experience.
  • NC Pesticide license.
  • Experience in turf management (improvement, establishment and maintenance).
