Senior Office Assistant
Interviews for the Dept of Environmental Health & Quality will be held the week of June 1, 2026. Job offers for selected candidates will be made on or before June 19, 2026.
Interviews for Self-Sufficiency Services will be held the week of May 25, 2026. Job offers for selected candidates will be made on or before June 12, 2026.
This position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $50,897.60 annually. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.
Future Salary Increases:
** June 2026 – 4.73% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + 1.23% Market Adjustment)
** June 2027 – 4.23% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the- Board + 1.23% Market Adjustment)
Senior Office Assistants are first-line supervisors in large clerical and administrative support units. They perform complex support assignments that require a thorough knowledge of a department's operating policy and procedures. Senior Office Assistants typically supervise daily clerical operations in high-volume customer service centers that serve diverse populations in a public-facing environment. They are often responsible for handling the most complex and challenging problems.

The current vacancies are in the Dept of Environmental Health & Quality, Self-Sufficiency Services, and the District Attorney's One Safe Place and CARE Center; however, the list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in other departments.
Hiring Process and Timeline
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.

Job Offer and Background Process begins: shortly after the interviews. Note: current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.

Education and Experience
Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. Qualifying education/experience:

Two (2) years of experience as an Office Assistant in the County of San Diego; OR,
-
Two (2) years of journey-level clerical/administrative support experience; OR,
-
One (1) year clerical supervisory and/or lead experience in an office setting.

Conditions of Employment
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
Evaluation
The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a nine (9) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
