The Senior Psychiatrist Specialist – Safety (Electroconvulsive Therapy Program) will be directed by the Chief Psychiatrist in Psychiatry Services at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Performs psychiatric evaluations
  • Provides clinical leadership
  • Primary provider of care, writes orders for admission, transfer, discharge, medications, restraints and seclusion, suicide precautions, etc., as indicated
  • Provides consultation on psychopharmacology and restraint/seclusion issues when so requested
  • Evaluates assaultive incidents
  • Evaluates and attends to suicide threats, attempts, or self-harm
  • Prepares court reports whenever indicated
  • Appears and provides expert testimony in Superior Court whenever subpoenaed to do so
  • Communicates effectively in spoken and written language with patients
  • Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI)
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment through response to physical assaults, escape attempts or other major patient disturbance, and assist in the management of the conduct of the patients
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative audits to meet State Licensing and Joint Commission standards
  • Provides preceptorship or proctorship for new Staff Psychiatrists, and peer review for all Staff Psychiatrists, as assigned

Working Conditions

This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

This position is eligible for up to one day a week of telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the department and is subject to change as business needs arise.

The Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero is a secure public sector hospital providing inpatient forensic services for mentally ill adult males who are court committed throughout the State of California. The Medical Staff of DSH-Atascadero requires Senior Psychiatrist (Specialist) candidates meet the Medical Staff criteria for allied health professional privileging set forth in the facility bylaws. Candidates applying for both licensed and unlicensed positions must submit the required documents listed under the Required Application Documents Section.

Interview / Relocation Information
