(JOB PURPOSE)

The Submarine Adventure attraction within the LEGOLAND® Dubai theme park, is a unique world class aquarium attraction. Guests experience a 1.2million litre main display onboard a constantly moving Submarine with panoramic underwater viewing windows of the aquatic life. Accompanying audio and visuals deliver an educational and entertaining message in a unique LEGOLAND style. In addition to the main display, the “Discovery area” is home to satellite displays including “touchpools” staffed and manned by the Aquarist team. The successful candidate will ensure the management, organization and continued development of this entire presentation, aquarist team and associated animal husbandry.


Main Responsibilities

  • Product: To develop high standards of displays presentation throughout all public and behind scenes areas of displays, whilst operating within available budgets.
  • Husbandry: To ensure the aquarist team consistently achieve high standards of animal husbandry as specified in company protocols.
  • Livestock: To ensure correct levels of livestock and key species are maintained through the development and updating of livestock requests.
  • Development: To ensure continual development of the displays areas by the strategic planning and implementation of the displays development plan.
  • Team: To ensure the continual operation, development and motivation of the aquarist team ensuring good communication and integration with the site team, internal company experts and external experts / partners.

BUSINESS IMPACT/RESULTS

  • Site based responsibility. Global influence in specialism.
  • As directed, management of accurate and agreed operational and capex budgets for the Submarine Adventure Aquarium
  • Ensure all record systems within Displays are filled out competently and comply with standards of operation and comply with local legal requirements (e.g. Zoo Licence).
  • Ensure the supply of healthy animals to features and key exhibits to allow opening on time and on budget.
  • Daily responsibility for the delivery of husbandry, life support systems operation and maintenance.
  • As the key member of the Displays team, life support system alarm & callout duties are required and as such the individual will be a designated key holder.
  • Manage onsite Health and Safety and comply with the statutory and company regulations.

CREATIVITY

  • Ensure best practice throughout
  • Deliver innovation, creatures, concepts and systems through trials, research and working with the displays team and Park Operations Manager to generate ideas.
  • Manage the creation/installation of new features that are key to creating compelling reasons to experience the attraction.
  • As directed, working within the guidelines for Animal Health, Animal Husbandry, Displays Creation and Maintenance and Life Support Systems operation and maintenance.


COMMUNICATION

  • Create best practice and update protocols.
  • Ensure communication with specialists, suppliers or external consultants to resolve issues related to the facilities.
  • Deliver excellent communication with the MAWD (Merlin Animal Welfare and Development) team and sites to ensure site issues are resolved appropriately and efficiently.
  • Work with the vet and animal health enquiry system and MAWD specialists to advise sites on animal health issues globally.
  • Lead facility briefings and meetings to ensure they are carried out effectively and efficiently.


DECISION MAKING & AUTONOMY

  • Work within the departmental / site guidelines, ensuring that on a daily and weekly basis the displays are maintained and developed to high standards
  • Deliver effective decision making whilst working within ethical and operation policies of SEA LIFE.
  • Determine in conjunction with the Park Operations Manager, the strategic priorities for the facilities over the short to medium term.
  • Ensure all members of the team understand and comply with the statutory and company regulations regarding health and safety at work and COSHH in conjunction with the site Health and Safety coordinator.
  • Ensure the effective management and development of direct reports meeting their development requirements and ensure effective succession planning is in place.


Health & Safety

Managers/Supervisors are responsible for all aspects of Health, Safety & Security within their department, in line with the Group Policy (HS001). They must ensure that risk assessments have been carried out, that safe working procedures are in place for all work activities and that all employees under their management are aware of the Group Health, Safety and Security Policy and their obligations under it. They must ensure that safe working practices are monitored, and that risk assessments and procedures are reviewed regularly. Where incidents do occur, they must ensure that they are investigated appropriately and that where necessary, corrective action is taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated




Qualifications, Experience, & Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • As gained through significant experience working as a Display head in the aquarium industry (experience of 3 year minimum).
  • A good understanding and working knowledge of Life Support Systems as employed on the site to ensure; correct maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufactures recommendations and swift resolution of problems if they occur.
  • A thorough knowledge of the Water Environment, which will allow the identification and resolution of problems with the environment for the animals.
  • A practical ability to create ‘wow’ displays with a working knowledge of the correct use of, Theming, Lighting, and Water Movement to deliver this.
  • A thorough understanding of animal husbandry, animal behavior and acquisition of animals to ensure each display houses amazing creatures.
  • A good understanding of how to set up conservation projects and environmental impact reduction that assist in underpinning the SEA LIFE brand.
