Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to oversee and provide a steady flow of tax cases for criminal investigations. This involves developing, reviewing, filtering and analyzing information received from various sources, making recommendations for criminal investigation and maintaining administrative control of all cases considered by the Tax Fraud Investigations Division (TFID). This position is responsible for the civil closing of criminal investigations. This position acts as the primary technical advisor to TFID Special Agents and prosecuting attorney during criminal proceedings, as an expert and summary witness.
How does it get done?
This position will be responsible for:- Development of tax fraud allegations from the public, internal and other sources for potential criminal investigation.
- Must have the ability to analyze various types of accounting records, tax filings, public records and other miscellaneous sources of information to determine whether criminal tax violations have occurred or whether the information should be referred for audit.
- Support the Special Agents in criminal tax investigations as the accountant and tax law expert which includes participation in witness interviews, conferring with the prosecuting attorneys, testifying in grand jury/trial and preparing requested schedules for trial (as needed).
- Responsible for the civil closing of criminal investigations.
- Acts as the primary technical advisor to Tax Fraud Investigations Division (TFID) Special Agents and as an expert and summary witness for the prosecuting attorney during criminal proceedings.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation to include eighteen (18) semester hours of accounting or auditing (six (6) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to six (6) semester hours of accounting or auditing) and two (2) years of experience in Auditing, Accounting, Taxation, Collections, and/or Finance. Four (4) years additional experience in related fields may substitute for the required Bachelor's degree. Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate issued by the New Mexico Board of Public Accountancy may substitute for the required hours in accounting.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. May be required to assist Special Agents in field operations such as interviewing suspects and witnesses of criminal/civil tax investigations.
