Senior Tech Lead

The opportunity

B8ak is building the home services technology infostructure for the entire sector, and a leading home services marketplace today. We're past the "does this work?" stage and squarely in the "how fast can we scale this?" stage. We're looking for a Senior Technical Lead to own the architecture, raise the engineering bar, and help us go from where we are now to category leader.

This isn't a maintenance role. You'll shape the technical direction of the platform from the ground up, build the team around you, and ship things that move the business — not just the codebase.

What you'll do:

• Own the architecture. Design and evolve the systems that power our marketplace and SaaS products — from matching logic and transaction flows to multi-tenant infrastructure and customer-facing APIs.
• Stay close to the code. You'll spend most of your time leading, but you're not above opening the IDE. When the team needs an extra pair of hands, a tricky bug solved, or a critical feature shipped on a deadline, you get in there and write production code alongside everyone else.
• Lead engineers, not just code. Mentor a growing team, set technical standards, run thoughtful code reviews, and create the conditions for great engineers to do their best work.
• Make the hard calls. Decide how to build, what to buy, what to refactor, and what to leave alone. Expedite velocity without affecting long-term technical health without paralysis.
• Partner across the company. Work directly with product, design, and business stakeholders to translate ambiguous goals into clear technical roadmaps.
• Scale the platform. Push performance, reliability, and cost efficiency as we grow — covering observability, CI/CD, cloud architecture, and incident response.
• Accelerate the team with AI. Set the standard for how we use AI coding tools to ship faster without shipping worse. Identify where LLMs and AI capabilities meaningfully improve the product.
• Hire. Help us recruit the next wave of engineers who'll define what this company becomes.
• Founder Mentality. Most important, you will own the decision, AI roadmap and contribute greatly to the products engineering.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years building production software, with 2-3+ years leading engineers as a tech lead, staff engineer, or engineering manager.
• A real track record building and scaling marketplace and SaaS platforms .
• Hands-on experience shipping SaaS at scale : multi-tenancy, subscription and billing systems, role-based access, and public APIs that customers actually depend on.
• Deep infrastructure chops: cloud architecture (AWS, GCP, or Azure), distributed systems, microservices, observability, CI/CD pipelines, and an eye for cost.
• A hands-on engineer at heart — comfortable dropping into any layer of the stack and shipping production code when the moment calls for it.
• Time spent at fast-growth startups (Seed through Series C ideally) where you've navigated rapid scaling, technical debt tradeoffs, and priorities that change on a Tuesday.
• AI-fluent. You use tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot daily — not as a novelty, but as a multiplier – we aim to build towards making our code 80% AI generated with time – you will be responsible in building this plan and executing it. You have informed opinions on where they help, where they don't, and how to integrate AI capabilities into products responsibly.
• Strong communicator who can write a clear design doc, explain a tradeoff to a non-technical founder, and disagree productively.

Bonus points

• You've been a founder, or have a founder mentality.
• Domain experience in marketplaces and/or SaaS is strongly preferred.
• You've built something at scale, with strong technical background and AI acumen.
• Work with founders directly.
