Job Summary:
The Technician is responsible for supporting surface and pretreatment technology development with application across Arconic’s processes including casting, rolling, extrusion, etc. This role is part of our Research & Development team and will conduct bench-top, pilot, and plant-scale experiments in support of R&D projects and operations, focused on surface treatments and coating of aluminum products across the automotive, aerospace, and industrial markets.
In this role, you will:
- Conduct chemical, electrochemical, and mechanical surface finishing operations at bench and pilot scale.
- Prepare, transfer, and safely handle chemicals, including acids and bases.
- Conduct surface treatment and coating performance evaluations.
- Collect, analyze, and organize experimental data to support process development, technical evaluations, and decision-making.
- Provide input, such as technical data analysis, to project managers/engineers/supervisor as part of project planning and scoping.
- Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
- Produce and evaluate bonding samples for automotive and aerospace material qualifications and process development according to the relevant specifications.
- Execute a variety of surface and coating tasks including batch surface treatment, surface tension measurements, bench top draw down coating application, and others.
- Travel to Arconic and customer plants, on an as-needed basis, to support implementation and troubleshooting of related processes.
- Provide verbal and written reporting to project managers and supervisor.
You have: (required)
- Associate of Science (AS) Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other related Science or Engineering discipline.
- Working knowledge of chemical hygiene practices, lab testing, and organization of data.
- Working knowledge of basic applications for data presentation including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. §730, et seq.) and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Authorizations from the relevant government agency may be required to meet export control compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other related Science or Engineering discipline.
- Experience working with chemicals, surface treatments, adhesives, and/or coatings, especially for metallic based products and processes.
- Mechanical and equipment aptitude, including ability to troubleshoot.
- Experience within the metals manufacturing industry, especially aluminum.
- Advanced data analysis skills including experience in data analysis packages such as JMP, Minitab, or others.
- Experience in scaling up processes from laboratory to production.
- Knowledge of general engineering principles as they apply to aluminum processing operations, including casting, rolling, extrusion, and related forming techniques.
- Attention to detail within daily working habits.
