About Us

StrongSteps Behavioral Health is a New York–based behavioral health organization providing peer support, youth services, and housing support across the state. We are building a professional, accessible, and secure web presence to support client referrals, provider partnerships, and community outreach.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior WordPress Developer to design, build, and maintain our new website.

Position Overview

The Senior WordPress Developer will be responsible for planning, designing, and developing our WordPress site from the ground up, including custom theme/layout, key integrations, and future scalability as we add new services. This is a remote contract position with potential for ongoing work as the organization grows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and build a responsive, accessible WordPress website based on our brand, content, and service structure.
  • Create or customize a WordPress theme that reflects our logo, colors, and healthcare-focused branding.
  • Build out core pages (Home, About, Services, Referrals, Contact, Client Portal link, etc.) with a clean, user-friendly layout.
  • Implement secure referral/contact forms (self-referral and provider referral) that route to our intake email.
  • Optimize for page speed, SEO, and mobile usability.
  • Ensure ADA/WCAG-conscious design practices (readable fonts, contrast, alt tags, etc.).
  • Configure essential plugins (security, backup, SEO, forms, caching) and document what you use.
  • Provide clear handoff documentation and brief training so non-technical staff can make basic updates.
  • Offer recommendations for future enhancements (blog, multilingual, portal integrations, etc.).

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional WordPress development experience (agency, freelance, or in-house).
  • Proven experience building custom WordPress sites, not just editing existing themes.
  • Strong skills in PHP, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery.
  • Experience with responsive design and mobile-first layouts.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating and configuring popular WordPress plugins (forms, SEO, security, caching).
  • Strong understanding of website performance optimization (page speed, image optimization, caching).
  • Portfolio of at least 3–5 live WordPress websites you personally built or led, with a clear description of your role.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, manage timelines, and work collaboratively with non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or developing websites for healthcare, nonprofits, or human services organizations.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1).
  • Basic understanding of HIPAA-conscious design (no PHI stored in WordPress, secure forms, etc.).
  • Experience setting up Google Analytics / Search Console and basic SEO structure.

What We Provide

  • Clear site map, page content, and branding assets (logo, colors, and service descriptions).
  • A single main point of contact for decisions and approvals.
  • Opportunity for ongoing work as we expand services and add new web features.

How to Apply

Please apply through Indeed and include the following or your application will not be considered:

  • Resume highlighting your WordPress experience.
  • Links to at least 3–5 live WordPress sites you built or led.
  • For each link, briefly describe what you did (design, development, custom theme, plugins, etc.).
  • A short paragraph answering:
  • “Why are you a good fit to build a WordPress site for a behavioral health organization?”
  • Your hourly rate or project rate range and typical timeline to complete a site like ours.
