Servant Leader (Summer Program)

Second Baptist Church is seeking motivated and compassionate individuals to serve as Servant Leaders for our Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® Program.

The Freedom Schools program is a nationally recognized educational and cultural enrichment program designed to support Kindergarten through rising sixth grade students in strengthening their academic skills, developing leadership qualities, and fostering a love of reading.

Servant Leaders play a key role in the success of the program by providing mentorship, instruction, and encouragement to students while helping create a safe, engaging, and structured learning environment.

This is a temporary summer position supporting a six-week literacy program and related activities.

Position Responsibilities

Servant Leaders will:

  • Deliver the Freedom Schools® Integrated Reading Curriculum to a classroom of no more than ten students
  • Teach literacy and enrichment activities during the six-week summer program
  • Provide academic, cultural, and recreational activities for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade
  • Help create a supportive, engaging, and structured classroom environment
  • Serve as a Harambee Leader during daily program activities
  • Assist with afternoon activities, special events, and student engagement initiatives
  • Chaperone students during approved field trips and program events
  • Set up and organize classroom materials and learning resources
  • Collaborate with program staff to support student success and program goals

Typical work schedule:
Monday–Friday, approximately 7:00 AM–3:00 PM or 8:00 AM–4:00 PM

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 19 years of age
  • Have completed at least one year of college
  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or be a recent college graduate
  • Maintain or have graduated with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to children’s advocacy and youth development
  • Possess strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
  • Be able to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Exhibit professionalism, maturity, and a positive attitude

Additional Requirements

  • Must successfully pass Arkansas State Police Criminal Background Check
  • Must successfully pass Arkansas Child Maltreatment Registry Check
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background screenings
  • Must attend a mandatory orientation meeting in April
  • Must be available to work approximately June 1 – July 24
  • Must be willing to travel to Haley Farm in Knoxville, Tennessee for Freedom Schools training (all expenses paid)

  • Demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and community involvement
  • Have experience working with youth, tutoring, mentoring, or teaching
  • Show enthusiasm for literacy, education, and youth leadership development
  • Appreciate and respect diverse cultures and backgrounds

Pay: $500.00 per week
