Focus is a fully remote digital services company dedicated to building highly impactful government digital services. We design and deliver modern, accessible, and secure software for government programs that impact millions of lives. From modernizing public benefits systems to improving federal data platforms, we bring together engineers, designers, and product thinkers who care deeply about usability, reliability, and creating real impact for our clients and the people they serve.
We're a team of five designers and researchers who stay curious, show up for each other, and most importantly, are thoughtful about how we work. As we continue to grow, we’re shaping the design practice at Focus while also contributing to the company's brand and website. There are many opportunities to grow beyond project-specific work, so it’s an exciting time to join the team.
What we’re looking for from you: We value seeing the messy work behind your solutions and understanding how you got there. We want to hear about your wins as well as your misses. Show us your approach, share what energizes you, and let us know what is important to you.
This role will support our new initiative with the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) to help design a portal that helps tribal organizations plan, apply for, and report on federal grants. The grants are aimed at reducing poverty, revitalizing low-income communities, and empowering families.
We’re in the early stages of the project, which means you will have the opportunity to contribute to user research, build service blueprints, and craft an experience that helps deliver critical funding to communities.
Conduct user research and build service blueprints to inform design decisions and delivery
Collaborate with ACF partners to define an MVP while continuing to work discovery and validation efforts
Work closely with product, engineering and ACF teams to understand and document the current state, as well map out the future state
Support the design lead with research planning and operations, including outreach to tribal organizations
Contribute to wireframing and prototyping, as needed
Support product in gathering and reviewing policy requirements that may influence delivery
Assist the team with documentation and knowledge sharing to ensure transparency and build alignment
A few things to be aware of, especially if you’re new to government work:
Every project is unique, and you can expect opportunities to apply your skills in both new and familiar ways
Project momentum fluctuates based on scope, capacity, evolving deadlines, and overall maturity
Because of government-wide policies, access to tools and software can vary between projects
Privacy, policy, and security constraints often introduce slowdowns or complexity
Documenting your work is essential for transparency and shared understanding
Most projects involve collaborating with cross-functional teams across multiple contracting companies
2-5 years of practical experience
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
Experience working within cross-functional teams
Ability to obtain and hold a federal public trust clearance
Lived in the U.S. for 3 out of the last 5 years
Duration: Around 2 weeks
Phone screen (30 mins)
Manager Interview (30 mins)
Portfolio Review Interview (1.5 hr)
Final Interview (1 hr)
Compensation Range: $90K - $115K
