Roads and Drainage Division - Service Worker / Equipment Operator I,II, or III (Class A or B CDL Required)

The Roads and Drainage Division for Polk County is responsible for the maintenance of existing county-owned roadway and drainage infrastructure, and the construction of new infrastructure to provide safe roadways for our residents and visitors. Roads and Drainage also receives and reviews Utility Right of Way Permits as well as road and lane closures on county roads.

We are responsible for:
- More than 2,750 centerline miles of roadway; that’s more than some state transportation departments
- 182 bridges
- 500 miles of sidewalks and 600 miles of drainage pipes
- 125,000 traffic signs and nearly 300 traffic signals

The Division has six sections to include Administration, Project Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Asset Management, Survey & Mapping and Roadway Maintenance, which includes Drainage.

Starting Pay Grade: (This is a Career Ladder position. Each pay grade has its own minimum requirements.)

DETAILS FOR SW/EO I

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Primary operation of construction and maintenance equipment listed below at least 50% of work effort. Duties include performance of manual laboring tasks. Operates one or more of the following:

5 - Yard Dump Truck, Tractor (Belly Mower), Tractor Mounted Broom,
Flat Bed Dump Truck, Chipper Equipment, Tree trimming equipment, Hydro Mulcher

  • Operates above equipment with the mechanical attachments which require the manipulation of controls on the vehicles and sometimes on the attachment itself.
  • May operate small gasoline or other powered machinery such as concrete mixers, air hammers, compressors, pumping equipment and saws.
  • Operates heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.
  • Washes and cleans and provides routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned.
  • May act as lead worker when assigned.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation of equipment.
  • Ability to make routine maintenance checks and emergency repairs of equipment.
  • Ability to see, hear sounds at a normal level, ambulate independently, drive from work site to work site, bend, stoop, sit and stand.
  • Ability to use multi-hand and/or foot controls.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials that are a minimum of five (5) pounds and greater with the average weight being forty-five (45) pounds.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment that may be required by supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold, swamp, ditches, dirt, and hot asphalt).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of road equipment required of the work unit.

Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Commercial Class "B" driver's license at the time of application within this classification.

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of licensure.

Boom Mounted Hydraulic Mower/Ditcher- Lightning Loader (Trash Truck)

Self-Propelled Mixer - Tractor Mounted Backhoe/End Loader

Sterling Bucket Truck - Self-contained Pothole Patching Truck

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ALL SERVICE WORKER/EQUIPMENT OPERATOR POSITIONS

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
