Job Summary
The Sheet Metal Designer – Automotive is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing sheet metal components used in vehicle body, chassis, and interior systems. The role involves creating detailed 3D models and 2D drawings while ensuring designs meet manufacturing, quality, cost, and safety requirements in accordance with automotive standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop automotive sheet metal parts such as body panels, brackets, enclosures, and structural components
- Create 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings using tools like CATIA, NX, Creo, or SolidWorks
- Apply sheet metal principles including bends, flanges, embosses, hemming, and deep drawing
- Ensure designs comply with GD&T, tolerances, and automotive standards
- Collaborate with manufacturing, tooling, CAE, and quality teams to ensure design feasibility
- Perform design changes based on prototype feedback and production requirements
- Support DFMEA, design reviews, and cost-reduction initiatives
- Prepare BOMs and documentation for production release
- Ensure compliance with safety, durability, and weight targets
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Diploma / Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal manufacturing processes (stamping, bending, welding)
- Proficiency in automotive CAD software (CATIA preferred)
- Understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and material selection
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Good problem-solving and communication skills
- Experience with PLM systems (Teamcenter or similar) is a plus
Experience
- 0–2 years: Junior / Trainee Sheet Metal Designer
- 3–6 years: Experienced Automotive Sheet Metal Designer
- 6+ years: Senior / Lead Sheet Metal Designer
