High School Diploma or equivalent with four (4) years of POST-certified law enforcement, or corrections experience.
Must possess and maintain current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Prior experience in Civil Process and knowledge of Writ of Fieri Facias (FIFA).
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, handling all employee concerns, directing work assignments, counseling and disciplining employees when necessary, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Checks time cards and daily activity log of shift personnel.
Assists in supporting staff on duty; conducts shift briefing; inspects weapons, equipment, uniforms and personal appearance.
Assists and supports staff in court security and in serving criminal warrants and civil process papers; serves warrants and civil papers, including locating and identifying persons named in warrant, arresting and transporting subject, and completing booking procedures.
Checks, reviews and approves all reports submitted during shift.
Assists with resolving problems related to employee relations, duty/inmate relations, and relations with the general public.
Extradites and transports inmates from other states/counties.
Communicates with relief supervisors in gathering and communicating relevant information on problems or areas requiring attention.
Assists in investigations of situations involving altercations, thefts, and other inmate rule violations.
Assists deputy sheriffs in providing courtroom security.
Maintains a safe and secure environment within the facility, (e.g... inmate counts, contraband checks, and key control.
Responds to domestic disputes and all emergencies to restore order, safety, and security.
Serves pick up orders and transports mental patients.
Picks up and transports arrestees to jail correctional facilities, doctors, hospitals, mental hospitals, or to courthouse for trials and hearings.
Assists in supervision and shakedown of inmates.
Assists in feeding inmates and supervising visitations. Issues traffic citations.
Testifies in court.
Makes training recommendations and assists in training new officers; develops, implements, and maintains a comprehensive training program for all sworn and civilian members of the Sheriff's Office.
Coordinates analysis of training needs; prepares training schedules and monthly/annual training calendars.
Prepares class materials, lesson plans, and instructional aids; reviews and reports finding of programs' effectiveness.
Maintains files of training records of all Sheriff's Office personnel.
Assists other agencies with domestic calls, traffic control, and other activities as necessary.
Oversees staff to ensure professionalism of deputies in relations with inmates; advises Watch Commander regarding employee and deputy/inmate relations.
Investigates potentially high liability cases.
Researches case law and department policy in reference to investigative work.
Develops and implements standard operating policies and procedures manual.
Researches, updates and maintains library of information on new laws and public safety/law enforcement subjects.
Instructs at Regional Police Academy and trains personnel on department firing range.
When Assigned to Classification:
Provides instructions to newly assigned employees in theory, case law, policies, procedures and methods of various classification systems.
Reviews unit members assignments daily for compliance with established guidelines to ensure accuracy of inmate assignments and reduce institutional liability.
Prepares inmate behavioral profiles.
Approves all completed reports; prepares special reports and daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for facility administrator.
Directs all inmate administrative activity; assigns and reviews all inmate classification decisions, inmate disciplinary hearings, inmate disciplinary status, and review hearings.
Approves disciplinary sanctions imposed on inmates; prepares inmate appeals to disciplinary sanctions for review by command staff.
Prepares investigative findings on inmate appeals and prepares preliminary investigative finds on inmate grievances.
Prepares written recommendations for the development, improvement, or standardization of policies and procedures.
Attends departmental meetings.
Operates GCIC/N.C.I.C. computer network terminals. Receives, reviews and investigates inmate complaints.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the county and the operations and functions of the Sheriff's Office.
Knowledge of law enforcement/investigative and administrative techniques and corrections processes, civil and criminal code practices, jail and field policies, courtroom procedures, record keeping, crime prevention techniques, extradition procedures, unified government geography, and other applicable policies and procedures as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.
Knowledge of developing and administering operations and staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the position.
Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, bonding procedures, policies, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the job.
Knowledge of any changes in policy, methods, operations, budgetary and equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental and operations and activities.
Knowledgeable and proficient with computers, GCIC/NCIC and JALAN computer operations, and the criminal justice computer network.
Knowledgeable in first aid and CPR.
Skill in the use of telephones, copiers, two-way radios, firearms, physical restraint methods and equipment, and intoximeter.
Skill in organization, management, and human relations.
Ability to develop and administer policies, procedures, plans and activities and to monitor performance of subordinates against measured established goals.
Ability to develop and implement long-term goals for the department in order to promote effectiveness and efficiency.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, management, employees, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the activities of the County as they relate to the Sheriff's Office.
Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner.
Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards, and resolving problems.
Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Ability to handle required mathematical calculations using statistical data.
Ability to read, understand and interpret personnel and financial reports and related materials.
