DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The ASCPL is hiring a Shipping and Receiving Assistant to support our Mission Statement to provide resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and community life.

The position works 37.5 hours per week, generally from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (though hours are subject to change based on operational needs), generally in the shipping/receiving dock and offices at Main Library in downtown Akron. The Shipping and Receiving Assistant performs shipping and receiving duties for the Library, including:

  • Sorting Library materials that are distributed to and between branch locations.
  • Placing Main Library items into appropriate delivery crates for branch pickups.
  • Sorting, preparing, and distributing incoming United States Postal Service (USPS) mail and interoffice mail, including metering and sending outgoing USPS mail.
  • Receiving deliveries from commercial shipping companies and truck freight companies and preparing items to be shipped from the Library via commercial shipping companies.
  • Notifying or distributing received materials to appropriate Library employees.
  • Fulfilling internal supply orders.
  • Opening boxes of new print books, validating invoices for accuracy, and delivering items to Technical Services.
  • Keeping the shipping and receiving area neat, orderly, and safe.
  • Breaking down empty boxes, processing recycling, and organizing reusable labels.
  • Fulfilling branch location requests for empty shipping crates.
  • Receiving and helping to unload donated materials and preparing them for Friends of Main Library review.
  • Preparing outgoing bindery shipments.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Skill in customer service. Ability to read and understand bills of lading, invoices, and related paperwork. Ability to operate standard warehouse equipment. Understanding of the principles of intellectual freedom. Ability to use a computer and job-related software or systems applicable to the essential functions of the job. Ability to lift moderate to heavy objects (more than 25 pounds) and carry them short distances (50 feet or less) and push shipping and receiving equipment and pallets/bins/carts up to 200 pounds. Ability to work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate. Ability to wear steel-toed shoes and other personal protection equipment (PPE). Ability to pass criminal background and education verification checks.

Preferred: 2 or more years of relevant experience.
