The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Shipwright Carpenter. This position plays a critical role in supporting the maintenance and operational readiness of Washington State Ferries’ vessels, terminals, and associated facilities. This position is responsible for performing skilled carpentry and shipwright work, including the construction, repair, and alteration of wooden structures on vessels, terminals, and commercial buildings. The Shipwright Carpenter constructs staging, shoring, temporary supports, stairways, ladders, and other necessary structures to support marine operations. In addition, this role performs building modifications and repairs, working from blueprints, plans, or sketches to maintain and improve terminal infrastructure. The position also provides essential support to other shops through wood crafting, cribbing, and protective cover-up work, ensuring the overall safety and efficiency of ferry operations.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Install, repair, patch, size, and replace various flooring and decking applications.
  • Replace and repair ceiling tiles.
  • Glaze, repair, remove, and install windows and mirrors on vessels and terminals.
  • Concrete construction, repair, form, pour, finish for sidewalks, slabs, curbs, vaults and foundations.
  • Perform millwork, fairing compounds, vinyl/rubber, plastic laminate, fiberglass, plexiglass, wall coverings, and general caulking, rigging, and repair.
  • Replace wire rope cables.
  • Repair roofing, plastic gutters, and downspouts.
  • Work safely at heights, and over water using, ladders, staging, man-lifts, scissor-lifts, and catwalks.
  • Construct cabinets, countertops, shelving, shipping crates, boxes, storage sheds and cribbing.
  • Construct staging and work platforms on Vessels and Terminals.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Journey-Level Craft Proficiency
  • Holds journey-level status as a Shipwright/Carpenter or has completed a recognized apprenticeship in Shipwright or Carpentry.
  • Credential & License Compliance
  • Possesses a valid state driver’s license and can meet required regulatory credentials (e.g., TWIC within 90 days of hire).
  • Regulatory & Safety Readiness
  • Ability to meet fitness and protective equipment standards, including respiratory questionnaire and annual fit testing requirements that may require a skin-to-rubber seal.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Maritime Work Experience
  • Prior work on vessels or maritime facilities (including experience from the U.S. Navy or U.S. Coast Guard).
  • Structural Fabrication & Support
  • Experience building working platforms, scaffolding, or similar structures used in marine or industrial environments.
