Sign Shop & Graphic Production Assistant

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Creative Manager, the Sign Shop & Graphic Production Assistant supports the production of signs, displays, banners, and flags. This junior-level role assists with graphic preparation, production workflows, file organization, and sign shop operations. The position also provides support to the Creative Department by preparing and optimizing graphics for web, email, print, and promotional use while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and brand standards. Responsible for project file backup and archiving.
This role is hands-on, production-focused, and ideal for someone early in their creative career who is eager to learn sign production and professional design workflows in a fast-paced environment.

Unique Job Requirements

Must have some experience as a graphic designer and/or production artist or in an in-house creative department or creative agency. Work in a fast-paced sign shop environment with multiple projects and timelines. Understanding of design, layout, color, and typography principles. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). Comfortable working on a Macintosh platform. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to follow established procedures, templates, and brand standards. Willingness to learn production equipment, materials, and installation techniques. Clear written and verbal communication skills, including basic proofreading.


Job Tasks

  • Assist in the production of signs, banners, flags, and displays
  • Prepare and organize digital files for print and production
  • Follow Art Department Standard Operating Procedures and approval processes
  • Support designers by producing and updating graphics for web, print, email, and promotional materials
  • Color-correct and resize images as needed
  • Maintain clean, organized, and properly labeled project files
  • Archive and back up completed project files
  • Assist with vinyl cutting, printing, mounting, and finishing work
  • Help track job requests, deadlines, and production schedules
  • Coordinate with internal departments regarding delivery and installation of completed signs
  • Operate production equipment after training (format printer, vinyl cutter, scanner, etc.)
  • Assist with occasional sign installation
  • Support marketing and sales projects as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Interaction with service bureaus, digital service companies, freelance designers and other services.


Qualifications: Training and Experience

Previous experience in a sign shop or producing signs, preferred. Proficiency in lettering and typography. Previous experience as a as a production artist or graphic designer as part of an in-house creative team or creative agency, designing and producing graphics for print and web, including using a Macintosh platform, preferred. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud applications required. Willingness to learn sign production techniques, materials, and equipment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of graphic design principles.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the production art process.
  • Knowledge of sign production using the following materials: vinyl, poster board, wood, plastic and foam core and other new product as they are developed.
  • Ability to apply graphic design principles to a variety of projects and signs.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud design applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro) and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Business English including composition, grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to produce graphics and art for web, print, and promotional items.
  • Ability to use Extensis Portfolio application.
  • Ability to manage and keep records.
  • Ability to conceptualize, schedule, and produce signs, banners and displays to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle a number of projects at once with various time lines.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate concepts clearly.
  • Ability to work as part of a creative team.
  • Ability to learn and use new computer software as technology advances.
  • Ability to use special hand tools including: brushes, exacto knives, rules and grommet tools.
  • Ability to learn to operate and use a personnel lift.
  • Ability to use standard mechanical scales: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, etc.
  • Ability to superimpose photos on a variety of surfaces.
  • Ability to follow safety practices including the ability to use a respirator.


Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Bi-manual dexterity that includes the ability to type accurately on a standard keyboard.
  • Able to walk up and down stairs.
  • Able to see, read and interpret documents.
  • Able to hear normal conversation in person and on the phone.
  • Able to climb a 12-foot extension ladder.
  • Able to work at heights of up to 60 feet in a man lift basket or on rides with a catwalk.
  • Able to see and interpret color accurately.
  • Able to work on a computer at a desk for long periods of time.
