  • This position requires a flexible working schedule, hours may be requested during the weekend, in the evenings and will fluctuate based on student and faculty needs in the simulation or skills lab.
  • This position is posted as Simulation Lab Technician, Senior, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Instructional Laboratory Coordinator, Senior.

About the Position

Under the direction of the Simulation Labatory Manager, the Simulation Lab Technician, Sr. is primarily responsible for integrating, maintaining, and operating the computer and audio/video (A/V) technology including the mannequin and surrounding simulation lab equipment and the nursing skills labs. The Simulation Lab Technician, Sr. manages the simulation room, mannequin set-up and take down, application of moulage, supervising student lab employees and recording and playback of simulations as well as maintaining the Skills Lab. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures related to the instructional laboratory environment. This position will have no responsibility for providing direct care to patients.

This position may require a nontraditional schedule based on lab needs.

Responsibilities Include

Simulation Lab Operations and Support – 40%

  • Coordinate the daily operation of NAU skills and simulation lab.
  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation/lab equipment catalogs and operation manuals.
  • Programs simulator software to model simulator's physiological response to instructor specification.
  • Responsible for operating patient simulators and cameras for the duration of simulations, along with maintaining the audio-visual and debriefing systems during simulations.
  • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested, such as mixing fake body fluids and creating wounds.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to organize, maintain, and restock skills lab and simulation laboratory supplies.
  • Provides recommendations on equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Sets up and maintains surgical/procedural simulators along with computer-based training programs.
  • Maintains and prepares simulation activities and protects student learner confidentiality within a hospital or medical setting.
  • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested, such as mixing fake body fluids and creating wounds.

Simulator and Lab Maintenance – 20%

  • Responsible for maintaining and repairing all simulation equipment, including: Patient simulators, computers, monitors, and a variety of medical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and contacts vendors as needed.
  • Provides technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including, Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, medication dispensing systems and vital sign monitors.
  • Provides technical assistance, support and training to faculty, instructors, and staff in the use of simulation equipment.
  • Set up and takes down simulation laboratory equipment.
  • May be responsible for quick simulation lab set up, requiring turnaround within one hour for rotating student groups.
  • Monitors and assures appropriate standards of lab cleanliness, provides for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment, complies with college health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulations.
  • Arranges for repairs/replacement as needed; makes minor repairs if able.

Skills Lab Operations – 20%

  • Monitors and schedules use, signing out, and movement of skills lab equipment.
  • Implements, updates, and monitors skills lab policies, procedures, use, and operation.
  • Maintains the lab inventory, ensures the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Orients instructors in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Responsible for modeling professional behavior in lab and establishing lab standards, including customer service, communication, attendance, and related behaviors.
  • Assists staff to appropriately integrate lab operations, obtain maximum utilization for the most efficient expenditures, and assists in moderating student costs.
  • Continuously updates and refines skills lab experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty in classroom/lab activities.
  • Supervises students for skills lab practice time.

Faculty Support for Simulation and Skills Lab – 15%

  • Transitions location of mannequins for effective use.
  • Sets up and breaks down equipment for simulation scenarios.
  • Operates software during simulation scenarios.
  • Provides audio/visual support during simulations and debriefing.
  • Programs simulation scenarios into software Moulage simulation mannequins.
  • Collaborates with faculty to prepare semester calendars that provides for maximum utilization of the skills and simulation lab facilities for students during their program of study.
  • Facilitates student skill competency evaluations and remediation, as requested by faculty.
  • Communicates with faculty to support student success and outcomes attainment.
  • Participates actively in NAU nursing program activities, to include faculty meetings, student recruitment and skills demonstrations.
  • Establish a positive learning atmosphere that assists learners in achieving curriculum objectives.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare discipline or Medical Technology.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or commitment to obtain CHSOS within two years of hire date.
  • Experience in a Lab Setting.
  • Extensive experience in computer technology and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with PC and Mac platforms.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Advanced clinical knowledge and experience working in a healthcare related field such as EMT, paramedic, or other allied health profession certification and training.
  • Knowledge of operation of standard audio-visual equipment: projectors, microphones, portable screens, media players, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of university and departmental safety regulations

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Skills in operating a PC and Mac with experience in MS Office.
  • Mechanical skills to competently maintain and use equipment in the simulation center.
  • Organizational and time management skills to keep materials in order
    track various projects, maintain files, and follow through assignments to completion.

Abilities

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology.
  • Ability to express technical information clearly and simply to non-technical persons.
  • Work effectively with other faculty, staff, students, and vendors in a positive, helpful and cooperative working relationship.

  • Ability to track various projects, maintain files, and follow through assignments to completion.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $58,882. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
