Role Definition
Manages function and staff responsible for procurement of materials and services needed in the manufacturing process.
Responsibilities
- Defining and communicating rules for supplier bids and managing purchases. Evaluating the qualification of suppliers and negotiating prices.
- Managing staffing, development, and performance management programs for procurement teams; managing, motivating, and developing project and team leaders.
- Assessing purchasing decisions through the analysis of historical and market information; recommending improvements.
- Managing the quality of purchased goods and services vis-a-vis requirements. Solving major supplier related problems.

Problem Management Process - MFG: Knowledge of manufacturing problem management processes, methodologies and techniques; ability to use a disciplined approach to bringing that problem to a successful resolution.
Level: Working Knowledge
- Uses a specific discipline or approach to problem solving and resolution.
- Records common problems and associated resolution alternatives.
- Monitors problem resolution and provides feedback to customer.
- Implements the established procedures for handling non-standard or unusual problems.
- Works with features of problem reporting and tracking software.
Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Knowledge of the concepts, principles and techniques of root cause analysis (RCA); ability to use a structured approach to identify the causes of undesirable consequences in a manufacturing environment and the changes needed to prevent recurrences.
Level: Working Knowledge
- Utilizes RCA techniques, such as Flowchart, Fish-bone Diagram, etc., to investigate basic problems, determine the causes, and find resolutions.
- Locates factors that resulted in harmful outcomes of one or more past events.
- Pinpoints behaviors, actions, inaction, or conditions that need to be changed.
- Extrapolates lessons to be learned to promote the achievement of better consequences.
- Practices RCA as an iterative process.
Supplier Management - MFG: Knowledge of processes and methods to effectively manage business relationships and transactions with suppliers of raw materials or product components; ability to apply related knowledge, experience and skills into real practice.
Level: Working Knowledge
- Follows procedures in carrying out routine supplier management tasks.
- Uses electronic systems or tools to record/retrieve supplier information and carry out transactions with suppliers.
- Resolves routine supplier issues; escalates non-routine issues up chain of command.
- Researches alternative vendors or suppliers; participates in supplier selection.
- Works with suppliers to ensure that purchases meet delivery date and quality specifications.
Purchasing Tasks and Activities: Knowledge of policies, regulations and processes of purchasing; ability to use practices and procedures for procurement of materials, components, equipment and services.
Level: Working Knowledge
- Records documents of purchasing tasks and activities, such as orders, bidding.
- Uses available procurement systems and tools.
- Ensures compliance with procurement regulations and contract specifications.
- Works with basic purchasing related tasks and activities.
- Adheres to various requirements and steps of the procurement process.

Previous leadership experience

Summary Pay Range:
$120,660.00 - $180,900.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
