Job Summary
Responsible for aspects of Respiratory Therapy. Demonstrates an awareness of internal and external forces impacting care and resources at the point-of-service as well as across the care continuum. Facilitates an atmosphere of participative teamwork among the staff as well as promoting and achieving the philosophy, goals, and standards of the organization and nursing services within his/her defined areas of responsibility. Contributes to the long-range planning process and day-to-day operations of the department and hospital. Collaborates in organizational programming and committee work. A commitment to clinical excellence is displayed through participation in and support of evidence-based practice and the consistent implementation of clinical standards of care and practice through professional development activities for self and staff.
Essential Functions
- Reviews charting by respiratory staff; identifies insufficiencies and appropriateness.
- Supervise operations of the Respiratory Department inclusive of Respiratory Care, Blood Gas Laboratory, and Pulmonary Function Laboratory as needed.
- Ensures proper functioning of all equipment.
- Ensures all blood gas laboratory procedures are followed. Assists Director with all surveys including CAP, NYS, and CVM’s.
- Addresses all incidents, irregularities, adverse reactions, complaints and/or any unusual occurrences and reports to Director
- Assists with the Development of and implementation of hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Ensures that staff members are qualified to provide care and treatment to all age groups served.
- Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development in patient care management and ensures that staff adjusts their approach accordingly.
- Demonstrates an understanding of age-appropriate communication/assessment skills needed during patient interaction and ensures that staff members possess these skills.
- Monitors age specific competencies.
- The Respiratory Services Supervisor fosters a nondiscriminatory climate in a manner sensitive to socio-cultural diversity.
- Develops and fosters relationships that support the continuous enhancement of care delivery and patient and employee satisfaction.
- Collaborates with nursing staff and other disciplines at all levels in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.

- Ensures compliance with agencies and accrediting bodies that govern health care delivery, both departmentally and hospital wide.
- Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical areas in planning, promoting, and conducting organization wide performance improvement activities and decision-making structures and processes.
- Coordinates and plans with the leadership team to effect changes that allow that organization to be competitive in a changing health care market.
- Oversight of the accurate daily update of employee time (Kronos) and the completion of payroll every two (2) weeks. Monitors absenteeism, lateness, and overtime in Kronos daily and counsels staff appropriately when compliance with attendance policy is not met.
- Monitors overtime and collaborates with Director to develop strategies to decrease occurrence.
- Meets regularly with Director to discuss departmental issues and inform of recent administrative developments.
- Reviews and evaluates plans for appropriate utilization of staff with the help of the Director.
- Actively takes part in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of employees for the Respiratory services department. Ensures sufficient number of staff is hired to deliver adequate, efficient, and quality patient care services.
- Participates in regular meetings with staff to provide supervision and assure communication.
- Mentors employees for further responsibilities and growth.
- Guides the delegation of responsibilities appropriate to the credentialing, education, and experience of staff.
- Takes an active role in developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures departmental policy and procedure is communicated effectively to all staff and followed up on accordingly. Reviews amendments to manuals with staff.
- Monitors Respiratory staff to assure required tasks are being performed in a manner prescribed by policy and procedure.
- Performs related duties as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care and an Associate’s degree in related field required
- Minimum of three (3) years experience as a licensed Respiratory Therapist with at least one (1) year experience in NICU.
- Experience in blood gas lab operations strongly preferred. Prior experience working in a leadership role preferred
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
- BLS required
- ACLS, PALS, NRP preferred
Licensure as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of New York required; Registered Respiratory Therapist(RRT) by the NBRC required
