CHD Overview:

Children’s Health Defense (CHD) is a litigation advocacy organization dedicated to protecting child health, ending the epidemic of children’s chronic health conditions by eliminating harmful environmental exposures, holding those responsible accountable, and establishing safeguards. Guided by science, we are tackling big pharma, holding big industry accountable at an unprecedented scale, and establishing safeguards to make a safer environment for children. We share our discoveries about harmful environmental exposures with the public and nurture a culture of leadership in communities. Our programs and resources cultivate science literacy and build a foundation of collaborative problem-solving among our next generation of leaders, scientists, physicians, citizens, and stewards. Working both nationally and internationally, our collaborative approach engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners.

Department Overview:
The Defender department encompasses two services that bring the latest news and resources to our community, The Defender and Community Forum.

The Defender is the news and views website for CHD. We publish the Top News of the Day newsletter, Monday - Friday, and the Most Read News of the Week on Sundays.

Community Forum covers community news and views, including chapter news, and CHD advocacy efforts, including action alerts. The Community Forum site hosts the community calendar and an interactive message board where paid members/subscribers can connect with others around shared interests. Some Community Forum content is included in the Defender daily newsletter.

Position Overview:

The Social Media Strategist & Content Creator is responsible for assisting the Editor-in-Chief of The Defender in the growth and engagement of The Defender’s audience across social platforms by turning Defender articles into compelling social media posts. This role combines strategy, editorial decision-making, content publishing, and community interaction.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute platform-specific social media strategies that support The Defender's content strategy and audience growth goals
  • Identify key highlights from long-form articles and transform them into high-performing short-form content, including rapid-turn edits for breaking or timely content
  • Research and implement emerging social media trends, platform updates, and new content formats relevant to advocacy and news media
  • Work closely with The Defender Editor-in-Chief to align content messaging and timing
  • Maintain consistency in editorial voice, brand identity, and visual presentation across all social platforms
  • Write engaging, platform-appropriate captions, headlines, and post copy
  • Schedule and publish content across social platforms
  • Manage social media content calendars to maintain a steady flow of posts aligned with Defender news priorities
  • Develop audience engagement strategies by monitoring comments, replies, and messages; moderate as needed and flag notable feedback or issues to leadership while engaging consistently to support audience growth and interaction
  • Track key performance metrics (reach, engagement, audience growth)
  • In collaboration with the Defender Editor-in-Chief, use data insights to refine content strategy, posting cadence, and formats
  • Collaborate closely with the CHD Marketing/social media team as needed
  • Test new formats, posting times, and messaging approaches to continuously improve performance
  • Attend meetings and events as required
  • Respond to calls, emails and text communications in a timely manner
  • All other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in social media, digital content, or media production in an online news environment
  • Demonstrated experience building social media followings from the ground up
  • Strong written communication skills and news judgment, especially for social media hooks, captions, and headlines
  • Strong understanding of platform best practices (Instagram, X, Facebook, Substack, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven media environment
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with social media management and analytics tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Google Analytics)
  • Solid knowledge of SEO and keyword search
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Aligned with CHD mission
DESIRED:
  • Knowledge of/ contacts within the independent and mainstream online news environments
  • Experience in social media advertising
  • Familiarity with Pickax
  • Experience with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva)
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field
