Social Services Advocate
The Social Services Advocate will assist the attorneys in the Public Defender’s Office with gathering information about clients’ life history that may mitigate or otherwise impact the clients’ criminal cases, such as mental illness/IDD, drug and alcohol issues, trauma, housing, employment, and/or chronic poverty. The Social Services Advocate will present this information to the assigned attorney in support of a resolution in the case, as well as assist the client in making referrals to appropriate services.

- The person in this position is responsible for obtaining information related to clients’ life history, including information about MH/IDD, Drug and Alcohol issues, special education, and identify what other issues a client is dealing with, including housing, employment, trauma, education, etc.
- Gathers records and documentation from the client, family and friends of the client, as well as from schools and treatment and government agencies, and completes a thorough review of those records
- Obtains the necessary releases and makes referrals in a timely fashion to assist the assigned attorney
- Assists the attorney in determining what information can be obtained to aid in an appropriate disposition of the case
- Assists in writing memos, reports or complete documents for sentencing or other court hearings, and be able to advocate for the client in court if necessary
- Determines what social services the client may benefit from and makes the appropriate referrals
- Maintains all client records in Spartan and other necessary databases.
- Attends county and client-specific meetings related to social services when relevant
- Keeps statistical information to measure the effectiveness of programs and services
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, or Criminal Justice with relevant social work experience
- MSW preferred (but not required)
- Relevant computer skills such as a good working knowledge of Excel, Word, and demonstrate ability to quickly learn to work with necessary computer systems such as AOPC, CPCMS and Spartan
- Experience with, or demonstrate ability to quickly understand the Criminal Justice system
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must have good skills in working with clients as well as agencies in the criminal justice system and social services
- Must be able to work independently, multitask, manage deadlines and work in a high-paced environment
