Compensation Range

The base pay scale for this position is $82,500.00 - $126,000.00. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to: scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.

Software Engineer - Cloud DevOps

Position Overview

The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) seeks a Software Engineer to architect and build the cloud infrastructure supporting technical development projects within its new Institute for Technology Development (HSS ITD). The role will initially focus on technical development within our groundbreaking Digital Twin Platform in Orthopedics project for our Digital Twin Platform in Orthopaedics project. This fully funded 4-year initiative will develop infrastructure to build patient-specific orthopedic digital twins to transform surgical planning and personalized care. You will design HIPAA-compliant cloud systems within our existing AWS environment, develop scalable data pipelines, and create the integration layer between web applications and high-performance computing resources for biomechanical simulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement secure, HIPAA-compliant AWS cloud infrastructure for medical data processing
  • Collaborate with project team members to enable automated data pipelines for DICOM image ingestion from hospital PACS systems and delivery of endpoint data elements to clinicians.
  • Develop scalable cloud architecture supporting AI model training and inference workloads
  • Create APIs and microservices connecting web applications to HPC simulation engines
  • Deploy and manage containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Optimize cloud resource allocation and cost management for variable computational loads
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and disaster recovery systems
  • Develop integration protocols with hospital EHR systems using FHIR standards
  • Implement automated scaling for GPU clusters supporting AI and simulation workloads

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in cloud application development (AWS preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in cloud-native development and DevOps practices
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Knowledge of secure data handling and healthcare compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and modern web development frameworks
  • Experience with database design and management (SQL and NoSQL)
  • Understanding of distributed computing and microservices architectures
  • Experience with API development and integration

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer)
  • Experience with healthcare IT systems and DICOM/HL7 standards
  • Knowledge of GPU computing and HPC cluster management
  • Background in HIPAA compliance and healthcare data security
  • Experience with medical device software development
  • Understanding of Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines and automated testing
  • Experience with monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Prometheus, etc.)
