As a Software Engineer on the Azure Core One Fleet Platform team, you will help build and scale the foundational infrastructure that powers Microsoft’s cloud services. This opportunity allows you to develop software and tools that support platform capabilities and new product introductions across a massive distributed system.
You’ll create extensible and maintainable code for backend services, collaborating with stakeholders to define user requirements and integrate feedback into future designs. You’ll contribute to testing plans and quality assurance, applying debugging tools, telemetry, and logs to proactively identify and resolve issues.
This role offers exposure to cloud services development, distributed systems, and computer architecture, with a focus on backend complexity and cross-team collaboration. You’ll learn to meet customer scaling requirements and apply best practices for performance, reliability, and compliance—ensuring solutions uphold high standards for security, privacy, safety, and accessibility.
Preferred tools and platforms include GIT, Visual Studio, and Code Agents such as Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, and Llama. Candidates with academic backgrounds in computer architecture, operating systems, networking, databases, data structures, and object-oriented programming will thrive in this environment.
Learns to break down work items into actionable tasks in collaboration with stakeholders, estimate timelines, and escalate delays. Supports feature deployments across cloud infrastructure and new product introductions, considering user impact and adhering to safe deployment practices.
Collaborates with cross-functional teams to define feature requirements and integrate feedback into design iterations. Establishes feedback loops using customer metrics to drive continuous improvement across backend systems.
Applies coding standards and best practices in object-oriented programming, developing maintainable and extensible code with guidance. Participates in code reviews and uses debugging tools to proactively and reactively resolve issues in distributed systems.
Supports documentation and dependency mapping for features, gaining exposure to system interactions and backend architecture. Contributes to architectural discussions and technical validation efforts, including hypothesis testing and automation integration.
Participates in live service operations and acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) to monitor and restore system functionality within SLA timelines. Integrates telemetry data to analyze system behavior with a focus on performance, reliability, and safety.
Develops and applies best practices for scalable, secure code. Understands global and local regulations, customer scaling requirements, and supports cross-team communication to enhance user experience and partner collaboration.
Ensures compliance with security, privacy, safety, and accessibility standards. Leverages developer tools such as GIT, Visual Studio, and Code Agents (e.g., Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, Llama) for code creation, debugging, and automation in production and deployment workflows.
Proactively seeks knowledge in cloud services development, distributed systems, and computer architecture, with a strong interest in backend complexity and large-scale cloud infrastructure.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, and proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, C#, Java, Angular, and/or React,

OR equivalent experience.

Professional and/or academic experience with cloud services development, distributed systems, and/or computer architecture.

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $84,200 - $165,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $109,000 - $180,400 per year.
