Who we’re looking for:

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Software Engineer with the Molecular Microbiology Clinical Laboratory at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake.

The Software Engineer will design and implement software, databases and cloud infrastructure for the state-of-the-art Molecular Microbiology clinical laboratory. This work will support clinical operations, rapid test volume growth, and custom applications and interfaces needed for our reference laboratory. The Software Engineer will work closely with faculty members and staff and collaborate with other Software Engineers in the department as needed to achieve goals.

This position will perform Python programming, developing web and database applications in a Linux environment, and will require an eye for UI/UX and use modern JavaScript stack (e.g. React). This position will work independently in a challenging environment and directly help improve the quality of patient care.

This Software Engineer will help maintain and expand our national leadership in molecular laboratory testing, will increase the reliability and scope of our web-based applications and infrastructure, and will build tools and workflows that improve our operation efficiency, ability to scale, and increase the capabilities of the UW Clinical Laboratory.

Work schedule:

• 100% FTE
• Monday – Friday
• Mostly telework; however, will be expected to be onsite based on the demands of active projects and the operational needs of the lab as determined from week-to-week

What you’ll contribute:

Software Engineering

• Full-stack web development including API design, front end design, deployment and database development.
• Integration with existing applications, including the laboratory information system(s), as necessary.
• Development of new backend services to support physical laboratory workflows.
• Administration of scientific computing infrastructure.
• Maintenance of software pipelines for data analysis (i.e., maintaining our customized environment, software, and infrastructure for performing analyses).
• Design and construction of databases for storing and querying laboratory and clinical data.
• Design and construction of web-based decision support tools providing interpretive information for health care providers.

Infrastructure/Cloud Engineering

• Assist in building and expanding our AWS application data infrastructure using CloudFormation and other code-as-infrastructure deployment technology.
• Deploy new resources (e.g., databases, servers, cloud-specific resources) to support application development and integration efforts.

Team/Laboratory Immersion

• Work with data science, analytics and interface/integration teams to understand current and future requirements for laboratory testing, decision support, result distribution and order interfaces.
• Understand broad scope of application development, current state of local infrastructure, and limitations present throughout the Department's laboratories.
• Build process diagrams with intent of identifying streamlined solutions and workflows that support improved quality, efficiency and throughput.

What you’ll need:

• BS in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, physics, applied math or a related discipline OR extensive professional experience in software design and/or development or bioinformatics.

AND four (4) years of experience in combination of:

• Fluency in Python is required, although less experienced candidates with extensive expertise in other programming languages will be considered.
• Experience developing software using modern tools and procedures for version control, unit testing, documentation, and code review.
• Extensive experience with Linux or other Unix-like environments.
• Fluency with SQL.
• Experience with manipulation and analysis of large data sets.
• Experience with commonly used software tools for biological sequence analysis.
• Excellent spoken and written communication and documentation skills.

Desired qualifications:

• Master’s in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, physics, applied math or a related discipline OR extensive professional experience in software design and/or development or Bioinformatics.
• Basic understanding of molecular biological concepts.
• Formal training in Bioinformatics or Statistics.
• Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon AWS.
• Knowledge of next-generation sequencing principles.
• Experience in development of or contribution to open-source projects.
• Experience with molecular biology or clinical microbiology.
• Wet-bench experience performing PCR and sequencing-based assays.
• Experience with molecular diagnostics.
