Solar IT Technician

Sunspear is seeking a Solar IT Technician to join our Service & Maintenance department. This is an excellent entry-to-mid level opportunity for someone passionate about IT networking, renewable energy, technology, and remote system support. In this role, you will support the monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the Hawaiian Islands. You will work closely with the Lead IT Technician and report to the Service Operations Manager.

As a Solar IT Technician, you will gain hands-on experience with industry-leading solar monitoring platforms and help ensure our clients’ systems deliver reliable, high-performance clean energy. This position is ideal for a motivated team player looking to build a career in solar IT and grow within a fast-growing company.

Core Responsibilities

Support System Monitoring, Troubleshooting and Repair

  • Monitor solar PV and BESS systems using platforms such as Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge Monitoring, SMA Sunny Portal, and others.
  • Identify and resolve monitoring, SCADA, software, network, and communication issues.
  • Help diagnose problems with inverters, batteries, data loggers, optimizers, gateways, and communication paths (cellular, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, etc.).
  • Perform root-cause analysis on alerts and performance issues under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Understand network topologies and create diagrams based on existing installations.
  • Work with electrical team members and use Digital Multimeters (DMM's) to troubleshoot installations in the field
  • Remove and re-install equipment on rooftops, including but not limited to solar panels, microinverters, solar optimizers, rapid shutdown devices, etc.

Assist with Remote Diagnostics and Performance Optimization

  • Conduct routine remote checks and support optimization efforts to improve energy production and system reliability.
  • Help analyze performance data, identify underperforming components, and apply basic remote adjustments (firmware updates, parameter changes, etc.).
  • Document findings and support the team in quantifying improvements for clients.

Contribute to Portfolio Risk Reduction

  • Proactively monitor systems for potential issues and help prevent escalations, downtime, or performance shortfalls.
  • Support coordination with OEMs for troubleshooting and warranty matters.

Client Communication Support

  • Assist in providing clear updates to clients regarding system status, diagnostic findings, and resolutions.
  • Help translate technical information into easy-to-understand language for homeowners and commercial clients.

Training and Development

  • Participate in structured training with the Lead IT Technician to build proficiency in solar-specific tools and best practices.
  • Learn Hawaiʻi-specific challenges including weather impacts, inter-island connectivity, and utility coordination.

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • 1–3 years of experience in IT support, networking, or solar/electrical technical work (solar experience preferred but not required).
  • Strong nderstanding of networking, inverters, data loggers, or monitoring systems.
  • Strong interest in renewable energy and willingness to learn solar-specific platforms (Enphase, SolarEdge, SMA, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, island environment with potential inter-island coordination.
  • OSHA 10 certification (or ability to obtain shortly after hire).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background checks (required for site access in Hawaiʻi).

Preferred:

  • Experience with solar PV systems, monitoring platforms, or SCADA.
  • IT certifications (CompTIA, Network+, or similar).
  • Familiarity with Hawaiʻi’s solar market, HECO/Maui Electric utility requirements, or island logistics.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with ticketing/CRM systems (ServiceTitan, Salesforce, etc.).

Driving Requirement:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the state where the work is to be performed.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle during the normal course of business and maintain a clean driving record.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work at job sites, climb ladders, and access rooftops safely when occasional field support is needed.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain).
  • Ability to lift up to 50+ pounds.
  • Typical schedule is Monday–Friday with occasional weekends or after-hours support as needed.
  • Visual acuity and hearing sufficient for construction/solar site environments.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
