Job Summary
The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center is seeking motivated high school and community college students to serve as Southeast Mississippi Planner (SMP) Reporters. SMP Reporters help maintain one of Mississippi’s most comprehensive community news and events calendars by researching, verifying, writing, and publishing civic information that connects residents with opportunities throughout Southeast Mississippi.
Working alongside professional journalists and university student leaders, SMP Reporters develop practical newsroom skills through community information reporting—the process of identifying, verifying, and publishing timely, accurate information that helps residents stay informed and engaged. Students gain hands-on experience in reporting, interviewing, AP-style writing, digital publishing, audience engagement, and community journalism while covering community events, government meetings, nonprofit organizations, educational opportunities, festivals, and other civic happenings.
This position is designed for high school juniors and seniors and community college students interested in journalism, communication, writing, public affairs, digital media, or related fields.
