Under the leadership of Attorney General Raúl Torrez, the New Mexico Department of Justice serves as the chief legal authority for the state of New Mexico. The NMDOJ works to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, and the rights of all citizens are protected.

The Special Investigations Division of the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) is comprised of separate units, each handling investigations in its own specialty area. The Division utilizes expert special agents for major criminal investigations across the state as directed by the Attorney General, including violent crimes such as child abuse, homicide, sexual assaults, and guardianship cases. The Division also investigates government corruption, fraud, economic and financial crimes, and forced, often working in cooperation with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Why does the job exist?

The Special Agent for the Special Investigations Organized Retail Crime Unit exists to curtail retail theft across the State of New Mexico through collaboration with law enforcement agencies and aggregation of shoplifting crimes.
How does it get done?

Conducting Organized Retail Crime (ORC) investigations, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, conferring with prosecuting attorneys, preparing demand letters, and obtaining subpoenas, warrant authorizations, or other documents needed to secure additional evidence from Internet Service Providers, cell phone companies, or other data storage sources. Preparing affidavits for warrants, serving warrants, searching premises to locate evidence, and collecting and processing physical evidence. Conducting surveillance of suspects or locations, preparing final investigative reports of case findings and recommendations for criminal charges, and testifying as a witness in a court of law. Locating, subduing, searching, advising, and arresting suspects when there is probable cause, and exchanging information with local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities and retail organizations. Providing training, technical guidance, and assistance to other law enforcement agencies and licensees within the agent's area of expertise.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Science, or other related field with five (5) years of experience in law enforcement, criminal investigation, white-collar or economic/financial fraud investigation. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Currently carry a valid New Mexico law enforcement certification or be eligible for certification by waiver of training.
Employment Requirements

Incumbent must submit to and pass an extensive background investigation, drug test and psychological examination. Must be a certified Peace Officer. Must be eligible for certification by waiver of previous training in accordance with provisions of Section 29-1-10 NMSA 1978. As a safety sensitive law enforcement position, incumbent will be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
Working Conditions

Working Conditions include extensive personal computer and telephone use, working in a law enforcement environment, potential statewide travel, periodic long and varied work hours, exposure to law enforcement investigations to include search and arrest warrants.
