The Prince George’s County Department of Social Services is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Special Assistant to the Director, (Administrative Assistant 3G) grade G24 position, in the DSS Trans Neighborhoods - Gen Funds Division.

About the Position
The Special Assistant to the Director acts as a key administrative and operational support role, closely assisting the Director in managing their daily tasks, calendar, communications, projects, and sensitive information, ensuring smooth functioning of the department by coordinating research and facilitating communication with internal and external stakeholders, often requiring a high level of discretion and organizational skills.

We do this by providing intervention services that strengthen families, protect children and vulnerable adults, encourage self-sufficiency and promote personal responsibility. We assist our customers through such programs as Temporary Cash Assistance, Food Supplement Program, Medical Assistance, Emergency Assistance, and Foster Care and Adoption Service.

Examples of Work



  • Provide advanced administrative and technical support.
  • Represent and communicate on behalf of Director and management interests.
  • Coordinate the development of meeting agendas, record minutes, and ensure follow-up on action items as requested.
  • Prepare presentations, slide decks, and meeting materials in advance.
  • Evaluate project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing to enhance efficiencies.
  • Lead change and facilitate innovation of processes for greater efficiencies.
  • Perform and manage complex professional planning projects, research, and analysis.
  • Provide overall management of division-related planning issues.
  • Advise the Director and Deputy Directors on all planning-related matters.
  • Serve as a liaison and perform all necessary functions in support of planning.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities.
  • Plan and facilitate external and internal stakeholder meeting.
  • Align project goals with agency mission and state plans.
  • Serve as the point of contact between DHS and PGC legislative teams on all things related to legislative needs and legislation bill feedback.
  • Assign and Direct internal Directors and Managers in completion of bill comments on all related or assigned bills.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to Directors, Managers and supervisors regarding comment process.
  • Review, edit, and submit a comment for the Director and Deputy Director to sign off.
  • Ensure that documents and requests meet established deadlines and are completed consistent with standard procedures.
  • Manage deadlines and drive legislative-related processes.
  • Maintain the developed document management system.
  • Represent PGCDSS in legislative-related forums and reviews.
  • Serve as liaison and coordinator for MASSB-related activities.
  • Assist in the management of members, maintain key documents, and required handbooks and by-laws.
  • Coordinate meetings, including agenda development, invitation to Department guests, and activities or next steps.
  • Assist with Special Projects as assigned.
  • At all times, the incumbent will provide customer service to both internal and external customers that meets or exceeds the standards set by the Department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in Liberal Arts, one of the Social Sciences, or Public or Business Administration; or field closely related to assignment/functional area.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in government or business.
An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

General Plan Information:

The Prince George’s County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.
Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.
The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).

New employees must enroll in the County’s health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.
The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
After enrolling in the County’s benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
