Special Education Tutor (Autism, Nonverbal Student) – In-Person

Location: Indian Head, Accokeek, Bryans Road, or La Plata, MD (library-based sessions; flexible meeting location)

Pay Rate: Negotiable, based on experience.

Schedule:

• Mondays: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (flexible within this window)
• OR Tuesdays: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM Hours: 1 hour per week (with potential for growth)
• Start Date: ASAP

About the Student

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced tutor to work with a 10-year-old student with autism who is nonverbal. The student is a visual and kinesthetic learner who benefits from movement-based, engaging, and hands-on instruction. He enjoys outdoor activities and responds well to creative, flexible teaching approaches.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized, in-person instruction tailored to the student’s needs
• Adapt lessons in real-time based on engagement, mood, and responsiveness
• Incorporate movement, visuals, and interactive strategies into sessions
• Create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment
• Use creative approaches (e.g., outdoor learning, games, sensory-based activities)

Qualifications

• Experience working with students with autism, especially nonverbal learners
• Strong background in special education or related field
• Ability to implement visual and kinesthetic learning strategies
• Patient, flexible, and able to build trust with students who communicate nonverbally

Preferred (Not Required)

• Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL)
• Familiarity with Waldorf or holistic teaching approaches
• Experience with AAC tools or alternative communication methods
