Position Overview

Thrive Nannies is seeking a warm, emotionally intelligent, and open-minded Special Needs Nanny to support a 4-year-old boy in Keller.

He has diagnoses of Autism (Level 1), ADHD, and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA profile). The family is specifically looking for someone who either has experience supporting PDA children or is genuinely open to learning about PDA-informed care approaches.

About the Child

This little guy is bright, observant, and often prefers interacting with adults over peers. He enjoys:

  • Hardware stores (light bulbs, vacuums, Roombas!)• Tinkering-type environments• Creative play• Adults who speak to him respectfully and calmly• Pretend play with a caregiver who participates with him

Transitions — particularly separations from a parent — can be challenging for him, as these are closely tied to feelings of safety and control.

When he becomes overwhelmed, he may express that stress physically (for example, knocking items over, throwing objects, or running away from the area).

The family understands these moments as nervous-system responses rather than intentional misbehavior, and they approach them with calm, regulation-first strategies rather than compliance-based discipline.

Important: Transition Period & Role Evolution

This position will begin with a gradual, relationship-based transition.

Mom will initially be home and present during the nanny’s shifts for an extended period while her son becomes familiar with the nanny at his own pace. During this early phase, the nanny’s primary role will be household support while naturally building trust and comfort within the home environment.

Household support during this stage may include:

  • Light dishes • Family laundry • Meal prep (if comfortable) • Grocery runs • General household tidying

The goal is not immediate separation, but safety and connection. As trust builds and the child feels secure, the nanny’s role will gradually shift to become more child-focused.

At that point, household responsibilities will be appropriately reduced in exchange for increased direct childcare responsibilities.

Patience, flexibility, and emotional steadiness are essential, as the timeline will be guided by the child’s comfort level rather than a fixed schedule.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal nanny will be:

  • Calm and grounded• Warm but not overly animated• Comfortable “walking on eggshells” without taking behavior personally• Curious and willing to learn about PDA• Emotionally regulated during dysregulation• Patient with long transition timelines• Collaborative with parents

Qualifications

  • Experience with Autism (Level 1 preferred)• PDA experience strongly preferred• CPR/First Aid Certified• Comfortable with gradual attachment-based transitions
