JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal direction to provide analytical chemistry skills and support within a mass spectrometry laboratory, or research setting. Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of one or more parts of research projects, or entire research project. Responsible for the engineering and technical operations of the organization, managing or performing scientific research. Conducts chemical and physical laboratory tests using instrumental techniques in making qualitative and quantitative analyses.

JOB DUTIES
Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of one or more parts of research projects, or entire research project. Provides analytical chemistry expertise in the performance of laboratory measurements, data collection, and analysis using chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Selects and determines correct analytical methods in approach to research investigation and in design of investigational goals. Adapts or develops methods to meet research goals.
Supervises and assists in recording observations and measurements. Compiles and collates resulting experimental data.
Assists in preparation of figures, tables, and descriptions of data and experiments for grant and manuscript submissions and for poster or oral presentations.
Determines additional equipment required for research projects and ensures compatibility with existing equipment.
Sets up and operates HPLC, GC, and MS instruments and other equipment used for the extraction and preparation of samples.
Trouble shoots, repairs, and adapts equipment.
Researches options and makes recommendations for new equipment and supplies. Conducts research to develop or improve analytical techniques, methodology, procedures. Investigating application of instruments in analysis.
Assembles and maintains equipment in accordance with specifications for analyzing data samples.
Performs statistical and other analyses and prepares technical reports regarding methodology and results.
Will likely provide working supervision to technicians or research personnel of lower grade.
Performs other duties as assigned.
