The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest and most complex Department in the Morsani College of Medicine with over 26 Divisions, Programs and Centers/Institutes, total human resources in excess of 1,000, and an annual all-source budget in excess of $143,000,000. The Department's ongoing growth includes the restructure of Cardiovascular Sciences from a separate Department to a Division, support of the microbiome initiative, and the execution of clinical, research and education initiatives focused on COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases.

The mission of the Department is to rank among the elite in the nation in the areas of education, research and patient care. The Department provides education and training for a diverse group of medical students, residents, fellows and health personnel from USF and throughout the world.

The Department's research activities are numerous and involve both basic and clinical research activities in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Our NIH funding is in excess of $120 million over the past 3 years. Patient care occurs in our affiliated hospitals (including Tampa General Hospital, H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, James A Haley VA Hospital, Florida Hospital) as well as our state-of-the-art ambulatory health care centers. The Department also provides healthcare support and services via contractual arrangements with many diverse organizations. The US News & World Report recent rankings of our subspecialties include Nephrology at 18, and Gastroenterology at 24 and Primary Care at 67.

The Department's faculty represent a group of dedicated physicians that are well recognized as leaders in all three mission areas.

This position typically reports to a Director, Associate Director, or Administrative Manager of a functional area. A Sr. Business Analyst identifies and defines the solutions that maximize the value delivered by an organization to its senor stakeholders. Underlying competencies represent the foundational skills, knowledge and personal characteristics necessary to support the effective performance of business analysis. A Sr. Business Analyst works across all levels of the organization and may be involved in everything from defining strategy, to creating the enterprise architecture, to taking a leadership role by defining the goals and requirements for programs and projects or supporting continuous improvement in its technology and processes. A Sr. Business Analyst has the specialized knowledge to act as a guide and lead the business through unknown or unmapped territory, to get it to its desired destination. The value of business analysis is in realization of benefits, cost avoidance, identification of new opportunities, understanding of required capabilities and modeling the organization.


  • Conducts analysis with senior university stakeholders, plans the execution of business analysis tasks and communication, updates or changes the approach to business analysis as required; assesses effectiveness of and continually improve business analysis practices.
  • Identifies and defines business needs and opportunities for improvement, develops the business case, understands organizational culture and structure, determines solution approach, and defines the solution scope.
  • Develops advanced business analysis within a significant segment of the university where the advice given and decisions made will have a measurable impact on the effectiveness of the organization.
  • Determines requirements using workshops, interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, user stories, scenarios, task and workflow analysis, prototyping, focus groups, and use cases.
  • Establishes the contribution that technology can make to business objectives, defining strategies, validating and justifying business needs, conducting feasibility studies, producing high-level and detailed business models, preparing business cases, overseeing development and implementation of solutions, taking into account the implications of change on the organization and all stakeholders.
  • Evaluates information gathered from multiple sources, reconciles conflicts, segments high-level information into details, and abstract up from low-level information to a general understanding.
  • Progressively elaborates the stated requirements to sufficient level of detail that accurately defines the business need within the specified solution scope.
  • Validates that requirements meet the business need.
  • Verifies that requirements from other business analysts are of acceptable quality and maintainability.
  • Documents business, task, and workflow processes using industry standard methods including business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, diagrams, flow charts, etc., ensuring that these deliverables can be used to design a solution to the stated business problem.
  • Assesses solutions to ensure that strategic goals are met and requirements are satisfied, including assessment of RFP responses, internal designs, test cases, test plans, and manual procedures.
  • Defines acceptance criteria, identifies defects, and defines and validates corrective actions.
  • Assesses organizational readiness for the solution.
  • Develops metrics and key performance indicators to align solution with desired business outcome.
  • Confirms that stakeholders have a shared understanding of requirements.
  • Manages conflicts and issues to resolution.
  • Obtains needed approval of solution requirements.
  • Ensures that stakeholders have access to business analysis work products.
  • Uses communication methods appropriate to senior executive stakeholders.
  • Manages requirements traceability and oversees the entire requirements management process.
  • Collaborates with developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyzes tradeoffs between usability and performance needs.
  • Serves as liaison and resource to project managers, developers, and other project team members throughout each phase of the process to help clarify and/or resolve issues related to requirement, design, testing and acceptance specifications.
  • Collaborates with project managers in project scoping and planning.
  • Guides senior management towards accepting change brought about through process and organizational change.
  • Serves as a leader to demonstrate the utility of business analysis to the university community and promotes the value of business analyst work.

Minimum:

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, with at least five years of experience in a business analysis or project management role.

Preferred:

Master’s degree and at least 3 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
