Sr. Hardware Lab Technician (Electro-Mechanical Assembly, Soldering & Test)

SafePointe® is an AI-based concealed weapons detection system built for high-throughput, free-flow screening. We are hiring a Senior Hardware Lab Technician to support end-to-end hardware execution: electro-mechanical assembly, electronics rework/soldering, fixture build-out, and disciplined experiment/test execution. You will work side-by-side with engineering to build prototypes, run structured tests, capture high-quality data, and help accelerate iteration from first articles through validation.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assemble and rework prototype and pre-production hardware (mechanical assemblies, wiring harnesses, connectors, enclosures, sensors, and PCBs).
  • Perform electronics soldering and rework (through-hole, SMT touch-up, connector rework, cable terminations) to engineering workmanship standards.
  • Execute experiments and test procedures exactly as written; follow checklists, document deviations, and escalate anomalies promptly.
  • Set up and operate lab equipment (power supplies, DMM, oscilloscope, function generator, logic analyzer as needed) to capture repeatable measurements.
  • Build and maintain test fixtures/jigs (mechanical fixturing, cable harnessing, simple circuits) to support calibration, characterization, and verification.
  • Collect, label, and organize test artifacts (photos, notes, logs, measurements, data files) with clear traceability to device serial numbers/configuration.
  • Support bring-up and first-article debug by assisting engineers with systematic troubleshooting (continuity, shorts, ground issues, connector/wiring faults, sensor placement).
  • Maintain lab readiness: inventory management, ESD controls, tool calibration status, safe handling of chemicals/adhesives, and cleanliness/5S practices.
  • Coordinate shipments/receiving of parts and prototypes; track builds and ensure correct revision/configuration is used in testing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on lab technician experience supporting hardware development (electronics, mechanical, or mixed electro-mechanical systems).
  • Strong soldering/rework skills (through-hole and basic SMT) and ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience building and troubleshooting harnesses/cabling (crimping, stripping, connector assembly, continuity testing).
  • Comfort executing test procedures with high discipline and repeatability; strong documentation and attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate common lab tools (DMM, bench power supply, oscilloscope) and safely handle ESD-sensitive components.
  • Mechanical aptitude: use of hand tools, torque drivers, basic alignment/measurement tools; ability to follow mechanical work instructions.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced prototype environment; ability to prioritize, multitask, and communicate status clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • IPC experience/certification (e.g., IPC-A-610 and/or J-STD-001) or equivalent workmanship training.
  • Experience with sensor assemblies and calibration/characterization workflows.
  • Familiarity with basic test automation/data logging tools (e.g., Excel templates, Python scripts, CLI tools).
  • Experience supporting environmental testing (thermal cycling, vibration) and post-test inspections.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and supporting NPI builds (EVT/DVT/PVT-style phases).

Tools & Methods (Representative)

  • Electronics: soldering station, hot air rework, microscope, continuity tester, crimp tools, ESD mat/wrist strap.
  • Lab: DMM, oscilloscope, bench supply, function generator, logic analyzer (nice-to-have).
  • Mechanical: hand tools, torque tools, calipers, fixtures/jigs; adhesives/fasteners as required.
  • Process: work instructions, checklists, build travelers, change control by revision/serial number, clear test notes and photo documentation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work at a bench for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform fine motor tasks (soldering/rework) and read small markings; vision correction acceptable.
  • Comfort working around electronic equipment and standard lab tools following safety procedures.
